Default N-frame non relieved target stocks question

Could a M27(No dash)produced in 1959 possibly had shipped with non-relieved walnut diamond target stocks?

Maybe. My understanding is they were used until the mid 50s.

It is possible as I had a 1950 Target 45 that was shipped with checked, unrelieved target stocks made of walnut. The revolver lettered with checked target stocks so I believe they were original. The 45 shipped in 1960. However, it is also true that stocks with the relieved area on the left panel were in general use by 1959.

Hello bigun
Shown below is a very Late Five screw bright blue finish Model of 1955 Pre-25. It shipped in April of 1959 and is shown with the Non-Relieved Target stocks that it came with. I spoke with the owner who had bought it new and he confirmed it left the factory with these Non-Relieved diamond center Target stock's on it, and they are of Ganacalo-Alves wood. I was told that some of the Model of 1955 Pre-25 Target Gun's in .45 caliber in the Five screw configuration like mine, shipped late as they were left over Frames that had been made up and stock Piled for the Pre-29's in .44 Magnum that were not used in that Caliber. To me, that is a Bonus as this gun should have a Hardened frame like that used on the early .44 Magnum caliber Pre-29's, unlike The later Produced Model of 1955 Target 45 frames that did not get the Hardening Process applied to them. I hope this helps, Hammerdown

Bill, is that the case for both K and N-frame targets?

Thanks, Russ

I am not sure about K-frames. With S&W anything is possible since they always used up old parts as they discovered them.

My non-relieved K-targets on my K-22 are from August 1960.

Thanks again to everyone for the great information above! Now I feel more confident about the non relieved mint diamond targets being original to my 27 "No dash" revolver.

I have a model of 1955, shipped in January 1961. It had the original non-relieved targets on it when I bought it, but problem was, someone in the past had relieved them themselves. So, I did replace them with a set that made it look original. Only problem, in my ignorance, I gave the original set away to a friend, and they are long gone.
