What did I find at my LGS?
I found this thing, I have no idea what it is.
Looked like a model 10, but the barrel (5" or 6") was a little different, almost tapered at the barrel end. Was not a 38 special, was marked 38 S&W. I popped out the cylinder and looked for a model number stamp, there was none, it had what I think was a 6 digit number that started with a 5. I should have written it down.
The gun was like 98%, excellent, and so tight you would swear it had never been fired.
Any ideas what I have here and what it's worth? The price on it was so low I thought it may have been a model 17.
I am going back tomorrow with cash in hand and buying it I think no matter what. I guess I will have to locate some .38 S&W ammo, which may be no easy feat.

If it's a S&W, it'd almost have to be an old M&P or a smaller framed
Regulation Police. What ever it is, I like your attitude. Let us
know when you get it. I love a mystery. TACC1

A Regulation Police in .38 S&W will be so marked and is a 5 shooter. If its a 6 shooter, 5" barrel, in .38 S&W it is a British Service Revolver, K-200.

Don't worry about finding .38 S&W ammo. There are a few places that sell it on the internet. I haven't been able to check my local area yet. I will warn you, the price is a little high, even in the on-line stores. 50 rounds for $28 is about the cheapest I have found. Take lots of pics. I am intrigued as to what you have found.

It's worth whatever it's worth to you...
Sounds a lot like a British lend-lease Victory/K-200/British Service Revolver as Waidmann said. Nice revolver, but very probably a shooter vs. a collectable. Search this forum and you'll find plenty of info. Look into the cylinder to see if they've been bored out for .38 special casings - maybe they'll knock off a few bucks if so. Smooth stocks? Lanyard ring? "V" prefix on the serial number? Proof marks? Pics!
Navarre, I found some Prvi Partizan (Serbian) .38 S&W for around $22 online (when it's in stock). No worse than any other I've tried.

Actually I went back today, and it wasnt a .38 s&w, it was a pre-model 10. I completely misread the barrel.

Ok, let's see how I did.
I ended up buying it. I believe it is a pre-model 10, but let's see.
Stamped on the frame in the crane recess:
K 6
58150
3
Stamped under the butt (serial number): C 37263_
Stamped on barrel: 38 S&W Special CTG.
4" barrel, old style hump sites, 6 shot cylinder
Blueing is 99%, with just one little area of what I think is surface rust on the cover near the S&W logo. Diamond Magna grips in pretty good shape. I think it's a 3 screw, only 2 visible screws.
It's been fired, dont know how much, but it's definetly been fired, there is slight buildup of carbon rings in the cylinders. But lockup is ridiculously tight.
I paid $265 out the door, no box or papers. How did I do, and what exactly do I have? I may post pictures if I can get the lighting ok.
It's definetly not what I thought it originally was, but I think I got a good one.

You did okay. 1954-56 M&P, pre-model 10 if you choose. I would not restrict myself on ammo choices. If not a re-blue you did a bit better.
Enjoy!

It's not a re-blue I am pretty sure. I will try to get some pics, but it will be tomorrow. I have been meaning to take pics of my whole collection. This gives me an excuse to do it...

It's a four screw gun. The grip is hiding one screw.

Great looking M&P pre-10 and you did well on the price. I have one that looks like yours. Production of the revolver is 1954. You have bought yourself a fine shooting revolver. The revolver will give you years of shooting enjoyment. To be honest its better that your revolver turned out to be a 38 special. The S&W 38 is much harder to find ammo and when you do its expense.
Again, congrats and good luck,
Howard

I think that my 5 screw pre model 10 38 special is the finest shooting smith I own, and oddly, the cheapest. Shoot that guy and enjoy it, they don't make them like that anymore even at 4 times that price.

It's kind of puzzling to me that some of these older guns, even in good condition are worth less than, say, newer model 10's or a like gun.
Also, is it me, or are the values listed in the SCSW very low on certain things?
