Jack Webb's 44 Magnum
I recently learned that one of the very first 44 Magnums was shipped to Jack Webb in late February of 1956. This revolver had the Sgt Joe Friday type serial number of S130714.
Jack Webb passed in 1981 and it is rumored that his 44 magnum, along with his S&W 9mm Model 39, are on display at LA Police Academy. Has anyone seen them? Are they still there?

I know that his model 39 was numbered 714 even though serial numbers for the Model 39 started at 1000 or 1001.

Both the 'gunny' and Friday were perfect characters for Webb!

I was a big fan of Dragnet as a kid, Henry Morgan went on to find further fame as Colonel Potter of MASH fame.
What a great intro, who can forget the music: "Ladies and Gentleman, the story you are about to see is true, just the names have been changed to protect the innocent".
Any pictures of Jack Webb's guns floating around?

One can still catch him, and Dragnet on Sirius' Radio Classics Channel 82 as well as Pat Novack For Hire another show that fit his deadpan style exceptionally well. Sorry I don't know anything about the guns, but I still enjoy the actors work.

I enjoy the Dragnet 1967 reruns on cable when I get a chance to see them. I did not remember that there was so much humor in the show, with Jack Webb playing the straight man to Harry Morgan's odd quirks and idiosyncrasies.
IIRC, the original tv Dragnet from the 50's had Friday paired up with a different partner and was pretty much serious all the time.
I think in Dragnet 1967 they both carried S&Ws in cross-draw belt holsters, with Gannon's being a four inch and Friday's being a snub of three (?) inches or less.

Yes, I think I remember Dragnet and Jack Webb back in the days of black and white TVs that you had to get up to change channels or volume. Back in prehistoric times when I was in middle age.

Jack Webb also played a mob "heavy" (?) in a movie with Burt Lancaster, I think set in Phillie. Don't remember the title- Jack was not a nice fella in this movie. Anyone else out there seen it?

Just saw a few episodes the other week on one of the oddball cable channels.
Sadly , Joe Friday reminds me a lot of my Dad.
Can't picture Jack Webb/Joe Friday owning a .44 magnum.

Hey, dont forget ben alexander who was frank smith his early partner. And there were at least two earlier partners too. I remember one episode that a gun came in the mail for friday. He tormented smith by not opening the package on his desk for quite awhile. I cant remember the model, probley just a M&P, but smith was envyious and showed his six inch K-38 from his shoulder holster. Now how can I remember that and cant remember yesterday?

Roy Jinks and I discovered that S130714 had been shipped to Jack Webb when we were looking at the invoices for some of the early 44 Magnums in 2010. I have no idea where the revolver is, but if it is on display at the LA Police Academy, it would be appropriate.

I just received confirmation, appropriately enough, from an active-duty LAPD sergeant that Jack Webb’s guns are on display at the Elysian Park academy. He promises pictures at a later date.

Jack Webb was quite cop friendly and is respected in the LE comunity to this day. He went out of his way to provide detailed realism to his shows, to the point of having actual phone extentions copied onthe set phones in the soundstage "detective's office". Of course, he also focused on the altruistic positives and chose to ignore the darker side of LE. The movie "LA Confidential" is a great look at the contrasting aspects during the Dragnet era.

Jack Webb movies
Interesting reading about Jack Webb’s life and career: Jack Webb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Besides his starring roles in -30- and The D.I. he backed-up William Holden in Sunset Boulevard and one of my favorite little comedies, beside Robert Mitchum in The Last Time I saw Archie.
But now I have to track down He Walked By Night “… loosely based on newspaper accounts of the real-life actions of Erwin “Machine Gun” Walker during1945 and 1946… During production, Jack Webb struck up a friendship with the police technical advisor, Detective Sergeant Marty Wynn, and was inspired by a conversation with Wynn to create the radio and later television program Dragnet."

Forget about Jack Webb. Let's talk about his wife Julie London. Might not have anything to do with guns but she sure is pleasing to the eyes.

I recall both Webb and Julie London, who was also a good singer, the sultry sort. Didn't she later play a nurse on, "Emergency"?
I think Webb had a S&W M-12 in some of the episodes. I think I recall him mentioning the Airweight factor. I had a cap gun like it, with a Dragnet badge in the plastic handle.
I believe that S&W gave Jack Webb several guns.

The only episode I recall seeing Friday's revolver was one where he shot a guy in a laundromat. Pretty sure he had a Colt Detective Special in that one. But often the guns change in TV shows.

Julie London was married to Bobby Troup (Dr Joe Early) at the time of the Emergency show. Troup was a former Marine officer during WW II. Jack Webb, an Army Air Corps member during the war, was a Marine Corps buff.
I wonder if it galled him to see Julie with a former Marine as her husband?

So does the guy that plays the Chinese cop Cho in "The Mentalist." Jack Webb was also in another movie called "Pete Kelly's Blues." I remember seeing it, but nothing else. He was a musician in it.
I think Ben Alexander (detective Frank Smith) went on to become a big-time car dealer in the LA area.

Seeing as Webb was the executive producer of Emergency looks like he hired them well after the divorce.Likely an amiable relationship.

In the TV series Dragnet, Jack Webb's character, Sgt. Joe Friday, carried the Smith & Wesson Model 10 with 2 inch barrel. His partner, Detective Bill Gannon, played by Harry Morgan, carried a 4 inch Model 15.
Both revolvers are very clearly shown in several episodes, but one that comes to mind is the episode where Friday has Gannon and Gannon's wife over to his apartment for dinner and another resident of Friday's apartment building, a so-called "police buff," telephones Friday to let him know that there are two suspicious-looking guys in the laundry room breaking into the coin operated washers and dryers. No shots were fired, but both Friday and Gannon had their guns drawn, and there are plenty of close-ups.

Congratulations on solving this mystery. Now we all know, thanks to Bill & Roy, that Jack Webb received one of the first 44 magnums. Thanks to you we have verified its location in the world.
The case is closed.
