Default Pre-Model 10 ???

Is this revolver called a Pre-Model 10? S&W 5 screw, serial #C310xxx, 6 shot .38 Special, pinned 6" barrel, blue, square butt. No adjustable rear sight, no model marking on frame yoke. I bought it today at the gun show for $425, 98%, all matching including the diamond grips. No box. Beautiful, tight gun! Any thoughts on year made and is the $425 price OK? Skip48

Likely 1955 or so. The book shows 1954-1956 for C277XXX to C402XXX.

Hope this helps.

Skip - your five screw revolver is early 50's 38 M&P or yes, pre Mod10.
Based on your description, you did great on the price. 4" barrel was most common, so your 6"er is a bonus.
Where's the pictures???

Probably 1954, maybe the year after if it sat in inventory for a while before shipping. Yes, that could be called a Pre-10, but on the box it would have said .38 Military & Police. This is the design that became the Model 10 when model numbers were assigned to the product lines two-three years later.

$425 is an OK price for a high condition .38 of this era. Most sell for less ($275-375), but most are also in lesser condition.

Don't forget we like to see photos!

Hi,
This is what your revolver probably looks like. This is my M&P pre-10 4 inch production 1954. I paid $330 for it. That is about the going rate.
Regards,
Howard

Thanks for posting the photo of your gun, roaddog28. Yes, that looks like mine, except for my 6" barrel. Skip48
