M&P Pre-Model 10 5 Screw
I Stopped by the LGS today and pulled the trigger (pun intended) on a Military & Police Pre-Model 10 5-screw for $400.
S/N C1789XX (I'll look it up when I get home)
Does not have original grips, box, papers, etc. But the gun is clean. Very little wear. The firing pin hole ring is clearly defined and the lettering is crisp with no pulls. Still has some color case hardening on the hammer and trigger.
This is my first pre-1957 Smith, so I'm pretty pleased.
I'll post pictures as soon as I complete the transfer onto my license.

Very nice find. The 1950 to 1956 era of pre-10s are great little revolvers. I have one production 1954. There is no difference to me between these revolvers and the model 10 starting in 1957. You will enjoy shooting your revolver. They are accurate and reliable.
Good luck,
Howard

When I looked up serial number C1789XX for the .38 Special M&P Postwar I get C1 through C999999 1948 - 1969. Further on I found the C prefix listing and my revolver is in the first group of 1948 - 1951. Probably closer to mid 1950 as that range of dates covers S/N C1 - C223998.
Pretty cool!
I'm hoping to pick her up later this week. I'll post pictures then.

As promised, here are some photo's of the Pre Model 10.
Nice crisp markings.
And its a CTG!
Is anyone familiar with this marking on the grip frame? It's not blurred, it was treble struck.
Now I have to get correct grips to replace the SILE grips it came with.

So the gun was manufactured in 1950 and refinished in 1951? There's got to be a story behind that. I may have to letter this one.
Thanks for the info.

I'm not sure about the 51. Usually, there's a three digit number like 6 61 (June 1961) for the datestamp when Factory did some work.
Look on the left side of the grip frame toward the front strap - is there any other stampings anywhere (under the grips)?
Nice looking revolver regardless.
