Somebody said..." Oh hell it's just an old gun & Dave won't mind ifn' I make it a custom job!"

That'd make a fancy sinker though...

When I was younger and more niave I let my sister's ex borrow my .303 Enfield rifle. It wasn't spectacular but it did happen to be the very first gun I ever owned. Well the doof left the gun outside in the rain one day and when I got it back it was lets just say less than pristine. I was able to get it functional again but I could not stand to look at it and sold it. From that point on I never let any of my guns out to anyone. That's why my son even before he was born got his own .22. It sits in the safe waiting for him in a few more years.

That piece would make an interesting pot pipe though, but think of the halluncinations he would get when looking down it good and stoned!

Could that be the last inch of a Registered Magnum barrel???? Something about the front sight set back makes me think that.

Dave, the latest test results show that iron filings from a R.M. are better for you than rhino horn. Asian market is going nuts over them. Looks like that hunk of iron might be better than a gold mine.. I'm headed out on safari to the local gun shops tomorrow April 2.

Looking at that picture some more, I have to wonder if there is a bulge about 1/4" in from the cut end? Looking at the reflection on the barrel I think I detect a slight bow in the reflection, leading me to think it was bulged.

Although part of me cringes when I look at that shortening process...I have to say that I like the finished product. Looks to be about 3.75". Did you happen to recess the rib on the shortened pipe? If so, then I'll really like it.

Richard,

Yup, I'd cringed too...If'n she hadn't been cut off a couple of times already.

From the blanked out length, then factory cut & finished at 6 1/2" before shipping.
Then sumswhere along the line she was set back to five inches.

I've acquire a couple of RMs for special project revolvers, ones that have been shortened previously and
or re-finished, jest to bring into the configurations that suit me best.

I'm getting closer to the finish line of this here race and want to be packin something nice from here on out!

And yep, I set that rib back & left it checkered clean to the end, might want to go back to the std. small base w/Patridge blade...If'n I don't get along with this here shortened up ol' King reflector.

She finished at 3 5/8"...Crown radius cut clean on the first go.

Su Amigo,
Dave

Dave,
If we have another last annual PD shoot, that gun would sure do to walk the sage brush with and mebbe even a promenade down town.

You really did a nice job on that one and the shuck to haul it in.

I figured, with your attention to detail that it would be well-done. Let us know how she shoots - that reflector base and the blade may be a bit high, causing her to shoot a bit, to a lot, low.

Thanks for sharing your projects!!!

Dave I like the "whole getup" myself. Have you had a chance to shoot it yet? If i ever inherit a well used RM with a long tube that's exactly what i believe i would do also. Something just a shade under 4" is just about the perfect carry length. Nice cowhide.

As a matter of fact, I'm headed down to the ranch with 'er right soon for too have us a good ol time.

It's jest a pure pleasure in life to have sumthing fix'd like ya like it, fur yur ownself.

I'll jest go ridin along with my spurs a jinglin and singin, "This Regesitered Magnums is a made for shootin and a packin "

Ya know I got another one....Mabee I need a brace of 'em
Ya knows,,,,I ain't above sportin two at a time.

Really the only thing that would make a quality pre-war side arm better, is a RM converted to .44 S&W Special.

Settle down now, April 1st won't come around fur another whole year!

But, on the other hand, I might not be able to wait another year.

Hello Dave
I really Wrestled with having my Registered Magnum refinished, but with it's grip frame cut and destroyed the way it was, it left very little choices... The way it was I could not shoot it due to it's crack in the lower grip frame where some Yahoo Brazed it back after they Hack sawed a 3/8" Piece of steel out of the lower grip frame, and destroyed the front and rear strap serration's by placing it in a Jawed vice and cranking down hard on it. The Phrase of "Pistol Whipping" came to mind with me seeing this done to such a desirable gun, as the condition that it was in left it as a wall Hanger or conversation piece.

Thanks to Horace Ford it is welded back with the Missing piece of 3/8" steel, milled down and the back and front strap's are now Machinist needle filed back to somewhat how they used to be. I do know that he asked me to never send him another one Hacked up that bad, but now I can shoot and enjoy it without worry of damaging it any worse. I hate that he had to reblue the gun when he finished his Machine work and welding on it as it really had a nice original finish, but it had to be done and no matter what, you can't take away from it, that it will always be a First Year Registered Magnum that I Now have a Ton of history on, thanks to our beloved Smith & Wesson Historical association archives and now it can be enjoyed as it should be & I would like to Think that if he were here among us S&W Lover's today, That Col. Douglas Wesson him self who created these Finely Crafted thorobred revolver's would approve of this gun's rescue effort's as he was first and foremost a Shooter who enjoyed his guns more so than Looking at them. Regards, Hammerdown

Wells fellers,
She don't shoot all that bad for a start....Like Richard said, a little low with that tall front sight.

Had to crank it up and left a bit...Last three stuck on the point of the shoulder purty good.

Need to try 'er out at longer range.

This pasture poodle was jest 75 ft. with me restin' on the open door jam of the pickup truck.

Hello Dave
Nice shooting there Partner ! My Registered Magnum left the Factory with a Patridge front sight blade on it. The owner who ordered it asked S&W what sight blade they would place on it and they replied the Patridge sight. It looks both Odd & Good to me on it as the Baughman sight blade had not yet been born in 1935. I wish I had more Patridge blades on my short barreled guns as it sure looks great on Targets...

Richard,

That RM of yours is just as grand as it gets!!!

I've got a first year as well...It kinda needs a face lift, one of these days.
It was cut back and re-finished at the factory, back in the 50's best I recall right now.

Then I'll have a pair of usin' revolvers to last me from here on out.

Su Amigo,
Dave

Hello Dave
If you like the looks of my Registered Magnum and want yours like it, let me know I could Persude old Horace Ford to do another. Mine was all hand Polished and I am sure it took him a while. I did not have any corrosion issues on my R.M., but the man did very well on it. He kept the factory stampings crisp and clean as well as the rest of the gun. Their Motto rings True at Ford's, that "they do very gun one at a time" and are very proud of their Craftsmanship....My wife & I Visted their shop last June before we attended the annual S&WCA meeting in Orlando, Florida. We took Horace & Larna out to a nice sit down seafood dinner and finished the night off in their Gorgeous home. They are fine folk's who treated us like family, or that they had been around us for years even though we had only spoke on the phone they made us feel right at home. Shown below is Horace Ford the Master Gunsmith him self assembling a Vintage semi auto pistol at his workbench with his Nephew looking on Learning from the Master, a candid picture seldom seen as well as Travis their Grandson who often helps his Grandfather assembling guns as he is shown with a gun's part's on his work bench or he often answer's the many customer phone calls...

Kurt,
Yes that is a fine blue job on your RM, right there.

The RM that I fitted to my holster is a '38 vintage,
ya can't tell from my photos, but it's still wearin a right smart of the original finish.

As an everyday carry around the place here I guess I'll just run with that.

Now on the other hand...This first year gun might wind-up being my next BBQ revolver for the duration.

Su Amigo,
Dave

Hello Dave
I have a Younger brother to my R.M. This one shipped in July, 1955 in Vanilla finish. Although it shoots as well as my 1935 R.M. It's action does not have that glassy feel that my R.M. has evidence of production style guns I Guess, but it would make a good Barbecue gun...Hammerdown

Default Well boys

Them slicked up and customized pea shooters is alright for snakes and prairie dogs and such. But, if you wanna get serious you need a little bigger hole.
Here's a couple for y'all to ponder.
5" 1950 Target with a 29-2 cylinder

And of course my old faithful Skeeter gun, I been whittlin on for a while

Laz,

I don't rightly know on value...Original configeration at 90%,
depending on whether or not it's nickeled or blued with correct stocks, etc...

Any provence or shipping location that is of prepicular intrest to the parties involved,
Could add to the value.

I'm guess here...If'n I'm buyin, anywheres from twenty-five on north.

Su Amigo,
Dave
