Default Model 27 Barrels- How do you tell the old from the new?

Hey Wise Ones,

In my quest for my 3 1/2in 27, I have started paying great attention to any and all threads regarding pre and modern 27's with the illusive (to me) 3 1/2" barrel. Someone recently mentioned something about how the rollmarks can determine the age of the barrel- contemporary vs. earlier non serialized tubes.
What say you Wise Ones?

Thanks in advance

Mike E

I certainly don't want to be mistaken for a "Wise One", but at least on my pre-M27 the lazy ampersand seems to jump out compared to later models from the 60s and 70s.

The other clue to look for is the quality of final polish seems better on the earlier guns.

As I recall they altered the front sight attachment at some time (the 70's maybe?) I've seen single pins and two pins.

No ex-purt here...But got photos!

Mid 50s pre-model number barrel w/pinned ramp & sight blade.

What I beleive to be 70s thur 80s, maybe even early 90s...Forged ramp w/pinned sight blade.

More current style of Model 27 barrel, rib, ramp & sight blade forged as one piece with barrel.

Hope this helps some.

Su Amigo,
Dave

In addition to the different ampersands, earlier barrels were serialized in the ejector rod shroud. They also have a more rounded shape to the front of the shroud and an additional period (.) between the "W." and the "3" on the right side caliber marking. The serial number went away first. Early nickel barrels had proud ramp pins, later nickel and most blued guns had the pins ground flush.

Top barrel mid '70's, bottom barrel mid '50's

1960ish
