I'd estimate late 1948 as the ship date for that serial number, although it's entirely possible it didn't actually go out he door until a bit later (like, early 1949).
Those numbers inside the frame recess that's exposed when you swing out the cylinder and on the crane itself served merely to match up components during manufacture and are irrelevant to dating your gun.
What you really should check is that the numbers on the underside of the barrel (also exposed when you swing out the cylinder) and on the rear face of the cylinder correspond to the serial number. Also, the numerical portion of the serial number should be stamped on the inside of the right side stock.
$460 seems a bit dear to me for a fairly run of the mill M&P, but it does look to be in fine condition, so though a common S&W model as it might be, still some years from now that price may seem very much a bargain.
