Default Pre Model 10 info?

Hello All -I got auction fever and paid $460 for this 1948? pre model 10 5".
Sn # C 25116
frame numbered 6
23002

crane numbered 23002
I think it may be unfired as there is NO residue on firing pin hole and cylinder front is a clean as a whistle. Might be my only saving grace?
Concerned I might have overpaid. INFO?
thanks

If you over paid it's only because S&W made so many of these but that one is a dandy so I would not worry too much about what you paid.
You don't say anything about the box and goodies so I take it you got just the gun. I still think you did Ok with such a fine condition M&P.
Congrats on getting her.

It's a 6". Measure from face of cylinder, not face of frame.

I know where there is one in same condition that they have been asking $800 for. Still can't figure why they think it is worth so much, but it hasn't sold in several months! I can say that of yours if as described and the pictures show I wouldn't have a problem giving $450 for it.

Nice looking pre-10. I have one and the production date is 1955. These are great shooting revolvers. They have the current short throw hammer and really are the same revolver as the model number 10s. As good as the revolver looks in the picture, you did ok on the price. I would much prefer to pay what you did for your revolver, than pay $500 to $600 for a revolver with the internal lock.
Good luck, and happy shooting.
Regards,
Howard

THESE GUNS HAVE BEEN MADE SINCE 1899 WITH MANY CHANGES. STILL MADE TODAY BUT ONLY IN 4 AND 6 INCH. IT IS BUILT ON A K FRAME AND COULD BR HAD WITH EITHER ROUND OR SQUARE BUTT. A NIB TODAY IS $500. AND IN EXCEL SHAPE $300.00 IT'S A GREAT WHEEL GUN AND WILL GIVE YOU MANY YEARS OF USE.

I'd estimate late 1948 as the ship date for that serial number, although it's entirely possible it didn't actually go out he door until a bit later (like, early 1949).

Those numbers inside the frame recess that's exposed when you swing out the cylinder and on the crane itself served merely to match up components during manufacture and are irrelevant to dating your gun.

What you really should check is that the numbers on the underside of the barrel (also exposed when you swing out the cylinder) and on the rear face of the cylinder correspond to the serial number. Also, the numerical portion of the serial number should be stamped on the inside of the right side stock.

$460 seems a bit dear to me for a fairly run of the mill M&P, but it does look to be in fine condition, so though a common S&W model as it might be, still some years from now that price may seem very much a bargain.
