Default Info for .38 Special

Hello, I recently received a .38 Special w/4" barrel from my father. It is S/N #C 204nnn, (stamped on the bottom of the grip). It is stamped inside, in front of the cylinder with 40897. Any information as to the model, year, & approximate value would be much appreciated. Thanks -dj-

It's known as a Military&Police model. Serial number dates to 1948. The 40897 number is an assembly number and means nothing once the gun leaves the factory. After they started model marking in 1957 it became the Model 10. In that condition it's worth about $400. Hope that helps.

BTW, welcome to the forum and that is a beautiful M&P.
