I am looking for some information about this revolver. My camera is not working, I'll try again later. I believe it may be a Smith & Wesson .45 Hand Ejector Model of 1917. The serial number is 28XXX, the same number is also stamped on the cylinder. There is no lanyard. It is nickle plated. S.& W. D.A. 45 is stamped on the left side of the barrel. GHS is stamped (not very well) on the left side near the firing pin. The grips are plastic, and has a small chuck missing.
It has some rust damage (can't get my camera to work, will try later), and wear near the edge of the muzzle. Can Yall' determine the approximate age and value?
It is a family heirloom and may be traded/sold in the family. I just want to be fair for both sides.
From your description, I think your ID is correct. These shipped in large numbers in late 1917 and '18, and were originally blued with lanyard rings and smooth walnut stocks. Depending on its mechanical condition, due to the refinish and the issues mentioned it is probably worth $400-500.
