Default Price of 38/44 HD?

I was at a LGS today and they had a 38/44 HD in what appeared, at first glance, in excellent condition. Probably 98% with just a slight turn ring, diamond magnas, 4" barrel and a serial number indicating 1954 production (my birth year). No box, papers or tools.

However, closer examination revealed a small gouge in the front sight, and some deep scratches on the underside of the barrel near the muzzel. (I think the gun was droped on concrete or asphalt.) Anyway, these imperfections were the same color as the rest of the gun - a deep shiney blue, with no other wear to be found. Given this, and because the S&W logo did not appear as deep as on my M17 (my only other vintage revolver), I think the gun was refinished. So how much is it worth? The LGS was asking $849 but would settle for $800. The owner of the shop told me that he doesn't think the gun was refinished, but I think it obviously was. For this reason, I don't think he will settle for any less than $800 (and Northern VA, where I live is a pricey area).

If not it being a birth year gun, I would probably just forget about it, but I am still slightly interested. Your comments would be appreciated!

Thanks,
kas

The gun being a postwar 38-44 in refinished condition. I would say 400.00.

I may go a bit more that $400 but certainly not $800. It's hard to do but if you can just try and be patient. Thay are out there. This forum is an EXCELLENT resource. Place a "want to buy" in the classifides. My guess is one of our members may just have what you are looking for...and for a better price. By the way, you have excellent taste. S&W Heavy Duties are some of the most enjoyable guns you'll ever own. I LOVE them.
Best of luck.

Roger

If it was mechanically sound I would pay $500 for it...then shoot the (expletive deleted) out of it and smile the whole time.
