I just completed an update of my files on Pre-War, Transitional, and Post-1950 .38/44 Outdoorsman revolvers. There are now almost 550 guns in these files. Although it is a sizable number we must consider that over 13,000 were produced. Our knowledge of the extant examples is VERY limited !

4,761 Pre-War guns produced- 244 in the files

2,326 Transitional long-action guns produced- 115 in the files

6.039 Post-1950 short-action guns produced – 189 in the files

I would appreciate it if any members who see these guns for sale in shops or on line copy down the serial number and drop me a note ! If you own an Outdoorsman that you know is not in my files I would love to hear from you and see photos of your gun.

Any help in documenting these wonderful revolvers will be much appreciated. All of my information is slowly being transferred into the SWCA database once I get shipping dates from Roy. I never release an owner's name associated with a particular gun unless permission is granted !

Thank you very much for the serial number of your Outdoorsman ! It was not in my files or the database. Very nice looking example. If possible can you provide a detailed photo of the front sight?

Best Regards,

Jerry

Jerry,

I don't remember if I ever gave you data for my pre-war OD.

Serial 40835, shipped 2/25/32 to Baker Hamilton, San Francisco, CA, part of a shipment of 5.

Don't know if you have my scratched up one, a pre war, 43454, customized by most likely the original owner. The seller to me didn't do it, and he was the 3rd owner.

Got one here:
S 140694
Star on frame next to assembly number.
RR WO sights
TS, TH, narrow trigger.

The legend is that the original owner, upon learning that the non magnum Ns were being discontinued (except for 1955 .45) rushed out and bought the last one he could find and sent it in to have it set up like he liked them.
I tend to agree, preferring the narrow trigger to the wide TT.
