Default Broken mainspring question

A buddy of mine said he had an old Smith that was broken. The hammer would go back but not fall. We took a look at it and the mainspring was broken neatly in two.

I had a 60's vintage Model 10 with me. Imagine that ;^P. Anyway, a quick look at it's mainspring makes you think it would work in the older HE. Anyone know if a modern mainspring would fit right into the old gun? Sure would be nice. Otherwise I need a source for the correct spring if one can be found.

The gun seems fine other than the broken spring and he wants it to shoot.

From the picture, I would not hesitate to use a modern "K" model mainspring.

I see no reason that a newer mainspring would not work on your friends older revolver. By the picture and serial number he has a M&P hand ejector made in the early 1900s. The good thing about any of the M&Ps is a lot of the internal parts will enter change. Should not have any problems finding a mainspring.
Good luck
Howard

I put a new Wolff K frame mainspring in a K-22 outdoorsman, works fine.
