Beautiful revolvers !
A quick check of the SCSW 3 indicates the K22 OD serial range was 632124 to 682419,
Interestingly boykinlp's is only 33 digits above that and 25 digits higher than the K22 OD delivered to DB Wesson on 1/3/31 serial 632132 .

My favorite is this first year K22 OD (serial 634273) has all the early OD features and shipped in May 1931, (exactly thirty three years before my birth).

Favorite photo of a well traveled O/D
Updating the thread for my latest purchase. Here she is with the holster that appears to have been her constant companion for most of her working life:
Also a link to her "story" and a few more photos:

Engine49guy - When I first saw this K22 with the King treatment, I was really interested in it. When I saw the very early serial number I knew I wanted it.

Sn. 645xxx. It has the two screw rear sight and a silver bead front. Thinking about having it refinished in nickel. I don't have any money tied up in this one because I inherited it.[ sort of] Anyway it's just a shooter grade like it is, I think it would be nice all gussied up.

Combat, when you say "two-screw rear sight" do you mean it has both the elevation adjustment screw and the new lock screw at the rear of the assembly? If the answer is yes, I think you now have the lowest known number on a K-22 OD with that style of sight. Would you be willing to share the full serial number with me via PM?
I have to ask because I never really know whether people are counting the front mounting screw as well. I know that collectors set the policy of counting only the elevation control screws, but I wish they had seen fit to include all screws going through the top surface of the rear sight. Seems to me there would be less potential confusion that way.
Maybe it is an unresolvable issue. There is only one configuration possible for something called a three-screw sight, and it is pretty clear what a one-screw sight would have to be even if you saw that phrase applied to a sight with a a screw at each end of the foot. Maybe they should have been called the one-and-one or two-and-one varieties.
On the question of refinishing, I know why you want to spruce it up. But I wonder if nickel is a little more "spruce" than the gun needs. In the 1930s S&W pretty much restricted themselves to blued target revolvers. But it's your gun and your call.

Here`s mine
I just got it a few days ago and haven`t yet shot it-but that will change very soon. I know the grips are wrong, so I am looking for proper ones . I bought some from shabby ones gunbroker that need restoring , but they haven't arrived. The ser # is 6549xx and it has the two screw sight.
You guys are really good to share your treasures.
My warm regards to you all, Jack

Hi
Here is a K-22 but it is not a target model but one of 4 we have found in the records. This one was shipped in 1939 to Seattle Washington in a two gun order the serial numbers were 4 numbers apart. the other two were shipped in 1946. One to a Col in the Army at Washington DC the other was shipped to a Navy Capt.
retired in Minneapolis. None of the 3 have been found as of this time. So they are out there some were.
This one is 99% complete with the original box and all the
paper work.
enjoy the picture and the story.

When I said I hada two screw rear sight on mine I meant there is one screw in front of the rear sight blade and one behind it. The other screw is out on the front of the sight tang. Three in all. Does that sound right?

See the last photo in post no. 60 above. That is what collectors call the two-screw sight. The small windage adjustment screws are not counted.

I went and looked at all the pics in this thread that shows the sight screws and mine is different than all of them. I'm posting pics showing how mine looks. The screw that goes in the recess above the hammer is missing. I can't find a sight made like this on anything. Thanks for all the help so far.

Well that's interesting. That is the basic S&W "single screw" sight, but it has been modified to permit some other form of sighting attachment to be added to the movable block. The nature of its mounting means that whatever the fixture was, it could be adjusted for height, but not side to side. I wonder if it was a peep sight. I have seen perforated disk sights that were mounted on some prewar revolvers.
I suppose whatever attachment was mounted there could have had its own lateral adjustment mechanism built into it.

Its hard to tell in the pics but the recess is finely machined and the hole for the screw is threaded all the way through so you can see the top of the frame under the sight. I would really like to see a pic of a perforated disk sight on a gun. If anyone has one handy.

David:
Another thought may be that that was someone's attempt to place a pressure "set" screw behind the sight, rather than the set screw that was added in front of the sight blade when the "two-screw" design was introduced.
Whatever it was for and whomever added it, the work appears to be precisely done.
Combat:
I've never seen a rear sight modified quite like yours... Here are photos of the "traditional" K-22 O/D two- and one-screw sights:

Richard, I wish that thought had announced itself to me. It makes more sense to me than some kind of bolt-on applicance.

This is one of my all time favorite threads! I'm so glad it got revived. My grandfather taught me how to shoot with his K22 Outdoorsman when I was about nine or ten years old. Unfortunately, I have no idea what happened to it after he died.

David:
A long time ago, Lee Jarrett had posted some photos of how the two-screw rear sight assembly works (they happen to be of a K-22 Outdoorsman) and they came to mind when I saw Combat's rear sight. Here is a link to Lee's post: Sight adjustment on pre-war targets
Lee's great and instructive photos added here for visual reference:
I can visualize the set/tension screw being placed in the rear of Scotter's sight and functioning in the same manner as it would when it was eventually placed by S&W in front of the elevation screw.

Some of these collections are amazing, and all the guns are beautiful. What stands out the most to my non-expert eyes are the wonderful sharp checkered stocks, the amazingly deep bluing, and the various front and rear sights not seen on more modern revolvers.

As long as this thread is resurrected, I'll post the photogenic side of my # 67458X shipped March, 1939 even though it's already out there.

I'm late coming to this thread, but would like to share my two K22 Outdoorsman revolvers.
The first is #656078, shipped May 1936. It remains almost like new.
But even so, I still come up short on this thread with no box or papers.
Sorry, not my best photography.
My other K22 Outdoorsman is #669233 and shipped March 1938.
I'll confess. I bought it for the Ropers. But now it is my "go-to" .22 revolver.
I'll never let it go. It lives in my range bag and goes with me every time out.
Again, not my best photography, but the photos are good enough to see why I love these two revolvers.
Thanks to all for sharing!

Updating the Thread for 679290
These pre-war K-22s have grabbed my attention and I am struggling to get loose of them. Thought that I'd bounce this to the top and update it with one of my more recent purchases (I hope that others would do the same...).
Something about the very clean lines of these guns really speaks to me. I have not been able to place my finger on the exact source...but, I like it.

I've gotten rid of all my K-22s but this one and a pre 18.
This one shipped in June 1932, has the one screw rear sight and a silver/stainless bead.
My favorite shooter, I bought it about 1997 when I lived up in Wyoming.

Geezer:
Beautiful gun!!!
However, are you sure that it is a .22? It looks more like a K-38 M&P Target. Reasons: 1) the taller front sight is consistent with all of my pre-war K-38 Targets, 2) there is a larger gap between the rear of the cylinder and the frame like on the K-38's (the K-22's all had counter-bored or"recessed" cylinders and fit closer to the rear of the frame), 3) A firing pin retention pin in the hammer for a hammer mounted firing pin, and 4) most telling - there is no pin right under the rear sight that holds in the internal firing pin mechanism of S&W K-22's.
Thanks,

This one shipped in 1936 and was purchased by my Grandfather and he gave it to my Father when he was old enough to have a pistol
Box? no Docs? no Tools? no Original Grips? no 95% bluing? no Lifetime of shooting memories and thousands of rounds down the pipe? Yes

You're absolutely correct, that was my favorite .38.
Corrected now.

You know, I'm coming more and more around to a way of thinking that I never thought I would when I first started buying guns.
I look at that, and I start to grasp just how perfect it really is, and I realize that I would trade vast swaths of my collection for it and not feel even the slightest regret at doing so.
I would die a very contented man having a fine collection of King improved pre-war Smiths.

I just went back and reread this thread. Conclusion: Some of you guys don't play fair. No wonder I can't find one! But, congrats to those of you who recognized true quality in time to give them a good home.

My first K-22 was a 17-3 made the same year I graduated high school(1970). Then I was able to find two pre-17s that shipped in 1952 including a birth month and year gun. Last Wednesday I picked up this K-22 1st model (shown) and posted pics in another thread. Shipped June '38, all matching, silver Call bead. Now I'm looking for a nice shooter. These are worse than pistachios.

I only wish I could match the quality of Richard's gun and accessories….a beautify complete package….
Mine is missing a box and that jewel-like sight tool…

Here's one I picked up this past summer. This one's from July of 1939.

Good weekend at the gun show. Not only did I sell 3 guns but I traded for a 22/40. Here's a pic of the 22/40 and an outdoorsman. Should the 22/40 have pre-war magnas? Larry

Nice Mitch with the old red dot front sight and a U notch rear. Love that combo, did you shoot it? Is this sight combo easy to use accurately? Larry

Hey Larry,
The stocks arrived today and they make my K-22 OD look period correct. They are only a few thousand off in Serial# from the gun.
Thanks again...

Thanks Larry, I like that combination also. I have not had a chance to take it out for a dance yet. It won't be long though and I will post some range reports.
