Default Postwar Commercial 1917 Transition

Found this on a junk table in Tulsa. Surrounded by $100 .25acp's and single barrel break open shotguns. The only Smith on the table. Sadly the seller did know what he had. I did get it for a fair price.

A Postwar Commercial 1917 in really nice shape. Serial number S210760 making it one of the latest known surviving guns. One of the last 22 produced (out of 991). At this point the highest known surviving serial number.

Interesting side note, the grips are serial numbered twice. One of the two matches the gun. In this thread: "The 1917 Army (Postwar-Transitional) Allen-Frame has a Postwar Commercial 1917 with a serial number 13 lower than mine. His grips are double stamped as well, and his second stamp is 2 digits lower than mine. Interesting isn't it?

I'm losing track of how many guns I have seen in today's posts that make me envious. This is certainly another one. Congratulations on a fine score.

OK, thread resurrection here! I just this morning took receipt of my own post war transitional 1917. Mine may be the latest known number at this point. It is S210763. What has got me all abuzz is that mine ALSO has the double stamped grips! At first I just thought it was probably an attemt of someone to make the gun appear to have correct matching number grips. Now, after reading above in this thread it appears the double stamping was a bona-fide method used back in the day. My grips are also high shoulder transitional type, which is correct. It has clearly stamped "210763" but above those numbers is a very faint "68381" (maybe). It is closed GB auction number 417104612.
I really love this gun and should have some better pics soon.

Roger
