Do We Discuss Closed Auctions Here?
Is it bad form to discuss closed auctions?
I understand "Rule Ten" which says we don't post active auctions.
There is a completed auction on GB that had a closing price that sort of stunned me. I'm a noob to S&W collecting and would be interested in discussing the auction item and the final price. This is pretty commonly done on a M1911 forum I follow but I notice little (or no) similar traffic here.
I don't want to be a rude noob - so is it ok to post such topics?

Yes, Closed auctions are OK to discuss, mention and refer to. Double check on including the link, though. I learned the hard way. I posted a live auction link to a FAKE Air Crewman as a "Beware"
reference (not to promote). It was inappropriate to post any link to any LIVE auction. I didn't want to ask if it might have been OK to post the prior (Closed) auction on the same gun that did not sell. When in doubt ... don't do it ! LOL !!

The only problem with posting closed auctions is that if the gun did not sell, the seller might immediately re-post the gun and it would technically be an active listing again. I got my hands slapped once by posting a closed auction that was immediately re-posted for sale.

Smith & Wesson Aircrewman M13 38spl Air Force NICE : Curios & Relics at GunBroker.com
Interestingly enough, I talked myself out of bidding on this when it was under $300. The next evening it had gone up by about 10x.

The Aircrewman is a collectiable in several different categories. It is G.I., it is S&W, not very abundant, so there are more buyers chasing a desired item. Wish I had one.

Wish I had one too.
The subject revolver had serial number removed from cylinder and apparently from the area behind the yoke. The frame SN was not shown in the auction pictures.
Seemed kind of rough to pull down so much money.
Is my frame of reference just out of whack?

I wonder when property of the U.S. Air Force ceases to be property of the U.S. Air Force? (this is an actual question. Anyone know how that works?)

Great question. I suppose we all accept that ALL of our U.S. Military marked guns were surplus, sold off by U.S. Govt., however, what about the guns taken home by G.I.s ? I wonder if there is a liability there by which Uncle Sam could say ... that serial number was missing, presumed , lost or stolen, by which it could be reclaimed ??? I wonder !
Any legal eagles out there ?>?

Sal,
I understand that under Title 10, nothing that's surplus can be sold to private individuals. It can be distributed to " lesser" agencies ( state, local) now, but no selling to the original purchaser ( the private citizen).
That's just what my DHS manual seems to say about it. Who here knows?
Might have to start a new thread.....

Wait a minute there were thousands of 1911's sold through the NRA (surplus guns) and the DCM (now CMP) has had many more surplus Garands, Carbines, Springfieds, etc for sale.

Omitting the question of surplus guns sold through the DCM, NRA, etc., there is an interesting LEGAL question here. When does government owned property lose its status as government owned?
Well, technically, stolen property NEVER loses its status as belonging to its rightful owner, no matter how many other owners the property passes through.
Alternatively, however, it can be argued that if the government made no attempt to recover the property, or ceased making such attempts at some point in time, then the property has been abandoned by the government and belongs to whomever "owns" it now.
I'd go with the latter argument - the Department of Defense, to the best of my knowledge, is not looking to recover any of these war souvenirs.

I know a guy who took home a 22 hornet survival rifle. They flew a B-47 to the boneyard. While they were taxiing a ways across the desert he took the rifle out of the survival kit.
I don't know what happened to the guns that were removed. They
'de-milled' the planes and removed all the equipment including the survival kits. The guns were probably destroyed.

In your case it is a different auction number; the one you posted was closed. Can't see how you can get zinged but consistency for forum members is critical.

This thread was started last year. I'm sure the link was good for awhile. Gunbrokers delete there auctions after a bit.

Standing by for LE response, but do not believe that the 'historic' US Gov guns have ever been put in the NCIC. If A National Guard Armory was broken into last night, oh yes.
Back when the Air Force had a rule that all passenger carrying plane crews were to carry minimum one gun on board.
The KC-135 tanker sometimes carries passengers, so they were required to have a gun.
So usually the Navigator checked one out of the gun room.
When they went all over the Nav usually carried his kit into base operations to plan the next flight.
Knew a Tanker Nav who had his stolen. He didn't even realize it was missing until he looked for it to turn if in. The OSI worked him over and you Mil guys will recognize the term 'statement of charges.'
After that, he started carrying a personal piece. I don't recall what model gun it was, I recall that the only time I ever checked one out from that same gun room mine was an old M&P.
Yes, I expect that one was put into the NCIC.
