A few months ago a friend told me about a gun that he got from a pawn shop. The shop had ID'ed it as a Model 28 and priced it at $375. The friend knew it wasn't a Highway Patrolman and the price was low so he bought it. I identified it as an Austin Police Department Heavy Duty for him. It turns out that it was #2 in the first shipment to the APD on June 3, 1952. It has taken me a long time to talk him out of it but I finally got it. Unfortunately, I told him too much about the desirability so the gun is now back in the "real world" price wise. The gun came to me with a set of Hogue plastic grips, a target hammer, and a trigger shoe. The grips are very comfortable but really don't do justice to the gun. I decided to put a set of Mexican Silver & Gold "folk art" grips on it since these were quite popular with Southwest Lawmen during the period of use.
It joins me with Austin PD Heavy Duty #145 (in the third shipment on December 10, 1956) which came to me with a beautiful set of rosewood presentation grips.
Neither of these guns traveled far from Austin. Number 145 was found in the Texas panhandle and #2 came from central Texas.
