A few months ago a friend told me about a gun that he got from a pawn shop. The shop had ID'ed it as a Model 28 and priced it at $375. The friend knew it wasn't a Highway Patrolman and the price was low so he bought it. I identified it as an Austin Police Department Heavy Duty for him. It turns out that it was #2 in the first shipment to the APD on June 3, 1952. It has taken me a long time to talk him out of it but I finally got it. Unfortunately, I told him too much about the desirability so the gun is now back in the "real world" price wise. The gun came to me with a set of Hogue plastic grips, a target hammer, and a trigger shoe. The grips are very comfortable but really don't do justice to the gun. I decided to put a set of Mexican Silver & Gold "folk art" grips on it since these were quite popular with Southwest Lawmen during the period of use.

It joins me with Austin PD Heavy Duty #145 (in the third shipment on December 10, 1956) which came to me with a beautiful set of rosewood presentation grips.

Neither of these guns traveled far from Austin. Number 145 was found in the Texas panhandle and #2 came from central Texas.

Very Nice Brother Bob!

My friend and our fellow forumite BruceHMX has done extensive research on that Austin PD guns and at one time had the largest collection of Heavy Duty and Model marked 20's around.

I'm going to send Bruce a link to your thread and your e-mail address. Maybe he has more info on these guns.

All my best,

Drew

Thanks Drew. I'd like to talk with Bruce and be sure that he has these serial numbers in his list.

Bob

Brother Bob... I just forwarded the link to this thread to Bruce. He is active in the Boy Scouts (his son, Edward is on the path to Eagle Scout) and I think that they are on a bivouac this weekend. But I think he'll be back on the wire tonight or tomorrow.

Mr. Bob that is a nice pair of APDs. :) I have APD #13 that was shipped in the same shipment as your APD #2, thanks to Mr. Lee. Which one of yours was used by Ray?

The price one pays for being "painfully honest." :D Nice Heavy Duty(s), Bob. Thanks for the pictures. :)

Leo918,

The beauty of the APD guns is that all of us can claim that ours was the one that "Ranger Ray" took to the Tower that day. I always felt pretty sure that my #145 was the gun. Now I'm conflicted...maybe he was carrying two guns that day.:D

Or even three, because I'm sure my No. 153 went up the tower too.

Bob, very nice pair. Congratulations.

The SWCA Journal had an article on the Austin PD guns within the last couple of years. Check your back issues.

And for you folks with APD guns but who are not members of the SWCA, this is an example of why you ought to be. Not everything everybody knows about S&Ws always makes it into the public forum. There is some good stuff that gets communicated only to the Association members.

Hey Bob

Congratulations on a great acquisition!

No, you all are wrong, it was my 246 that Ranger Ray was carrying!!!!
Nice one Bob.
David, I wrote the APD article.

Bob,

Very nice pair of HD's.

I keep hoping that the lost records of these guns will surface in time.

.

It's been rumored that an ol coot up on the Red River has one of Ranger Ray's HDs from the APD days.....;)

Believe he said he came across'd it hidden in the wall of the Justice of the Peace office in New Braumfels.....

We may never know......But, for the time being, let's jest bet on Mr. Bob having it. :D

Bob, ya know I do like em so!

Thanks for postin em!

Su Amigo,
Dave

Dave,

You know how it is with those old rumors...they just go from one 'ol coot to another...

You came to mind when I was puttin' those old meskin silvers on at'un. Thought it looked a little like something 'ya might sport on a "Going to Court" day.
