Default .38/44 Heavy Duty?

That is what this is right?

Smith & Wesson Military Police M&P - S/N 50xxx : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

I've been kind of bored at work lately and spending far too much time on Gunbroker. I came across this gun and I stared at it for a good 3 minutes trying to sort out what was wrong with the gun, since something about it didn't match the description, even though the description included the S/N. Eventually it dawned on me when I stopped looking at the stocks and looked at the shroud.

I'm not entirely sure how much a gun like this is worth these days. I've not been able to price out one with numbered Magnas. All I really know is that I have an ever mounting lust for 1930's guns with Magnas on them, so when I saw this I pretty much just had to have it. After winning the auction I'm kind of curious if I've overpaid for this gun too (some of you clever internet sleuths may be able to deduce the other gun that I purchased in an idiotic fit of auction madness).

Sure looks like a Heavy Duty to me.
In today's market that is a decent deal.
Congratulations, you're gonna like that one.

That's better than a decent deal , on a pre-war HD (1937/1938?), IMO .

Nice gun and if all # matching you got a bargain .

If you feel you overpaid just send the gun to me and I'll match your $ .

Good eye , nice snag .

Regards ,
George

The stocks are worth what the gun sold for.

I know that one set sold on ebay for $800, but really I can't imagine any set would sell for that much.

Besides, the sacrilege of separating this gun from it's numbered stocks would stain my soul forever, I could never do that.

Thanks for the confirmation guys. I appreciate it.

For the record this is the HD I will be upgrading from. It's looking like it will be a pretty big jump:

Funny thing is that I am pretty happy with this gun, save for the red ramp, which annoys me because I just love the look of the front sights before they started ramping them.

You really knocked that one out of the park. And yes, those prewar magnas are worth the cost of the gun!

I'm lining up its twin with a 4" barrel right now. The grips are not numbered to the gun. The asking price is $900. I'm going to have it on layaway for a couple of months. So god willing I will send out some pictures when I get in my hands.

Nice find! ... well worth the money spent. I'll look forward to a range report and more pics after you get it home.

It arrived. You should be able to click on any picture to get a much larger version of it.

All matching, timing, lockup great.

Interesting pattern in the stocks, at first I thought it was a repair, but then I looked closely and I think it's just how the wood was. I took a very close up picture of it to get some opinions from you guys. Which looking at it now makes me think its a repair. What do you guys think?

Anyway, I can't say as I am displeased in any way shape or form with this gun.

Looks like a great gun. The grips are just showing the grain in my opinion and they don't look like they have been repaired. I think it is worn down and not repaired as the grain on the inside is too matching to be a repair job in my opinion.

I'm not seeing anything to suggest a refinished gun or grips. It looks very clean to me - one I'd sure be proud to own.
