Model 10 no dash 4 screw&Butt Swivel/Letter Arrived
I don't see many of these and I'm wondering if someone can tell me approximately how many were made. It looks like S&W went to the -1 pretty quickly after they started the number model system.

The book says Mod 10 no dash was produced from June 57 to April 59, so about 22 months - but no SNs provided.

That's the S/N? I have one that is #C 45939X, and dates to Oct. 59. It was evidently a police revolver judging from the right grip wear. I figured when I got it there weren't too many 4 screw ones.

I have 3 model 10 4 screw guns. The highest SN. C53597X from about 1961 or so. I also have a gun, SN. C8086XX from about 1965. It is a 10-5. So using my twisted logic, they went from 10- nothing to 10-5 during those years. And if this helps I have a 4 screw .38 M&P SN. C4325XX. Anyway, a pic of two of my model 10 no dashes.

I believe it's in the 490 thousand range. It's in the basememt and pictures will be taken in the A.M. It is a real sweetheart with some odd features. More to come.

Just looking at SNs for that 1957-59 period, I would estimate that between 20,000 and 25,000 Model 10 no-dashes were made.

Thanks Dwalt. It's a great looking gun, but the one thing that concerns me is the lanyard loop. The serial number is crowded to the rear of the loop and I'm hoping S&W did that. Only a letter from Mr. Jinks will tell.

Well, that's different. Never seen a model marked 10 with a lanyard ring. Cramming the SN to one side of the ring is normal. Are your grips numbered to the gun? All my no dash 10's have PC magnas.

Well yes, but remember that on the Model 10, at least two dash numbers were always being produced simultaneously, due to the heavy barrel/tapered barrel issue.

Lanyard ring 10's and other model numbers were frequently ordered for motorcycle cops. I've had a couple of them and still have one with a 5" barrel. Mine has the letter and numbers to the right of the lanyard ring.

It's funny this thread would come up. My buddy calls me today to tell me he picked up a really nice Model 10. I say, "10 dash what?" He says, "It's a no dash." Starts describing it and I'm getting greener by the minute. Says he got it at the Pawn Shop. Well, you guessed it, he was at my favorite honey hole and it came in while he was standing there. Geeez, some guys have ALL the luck! See, ya can't miss even one day! Anyway, I'm happy for him, NOT! No, really I am. I figure if he ever decides to part with it, I'll have first dibs. So, here it is. The first two are post clean up. The serial number pic is pre cleaning, so most of that crud is gone now. Oh, and even though the bottom of the frame looks like it's in the white, it's not. There is a ton of deep dark, old timey S&W bluing left on this gun. The pics really don't do it justice. I'm thinking 1960 birth date. And, one other thing. What's the hole for??
By the way Tom, that 10 of yours is definitely a "10"! Where'd you come by that one?? What a beautiful gun!

An auction down south, Ken. My understanding is the hole was for a jig.

Grips are not numbered to the gun. The grips that were on it were badly chipped. These grips are from about 1953.

I am still waiting for my letter on this one. It should be here some time next month. One other feature that has me wondering is the lack of a S&W emblem on either side of the frame. Is that normal? There is no indication of a refinish anywhere, although the gun is polished like a model 27. I'm hoping for something good with the letter.

I see an "emblem" on the right side of the frame, on the side plate... Don't I?

I guess it's time to start wearing my glasses. I was looking at my pictures and not the gun and didn't see it in the picture. Getting old is not fun.

I wouldn't worry too much about your vision....Pretty easy to get "dazzled" by the finish of your model 10....

The Pre-Model10/Model 10 transition guns have fascinated me since I picked up this one late last year, off arms list.
The seller warned me it "showed a lot of wear".
In reality, it shows some honest wear, not too much. The grips were replaced at some point. No model number on frame, and serial C4220XX.
Somebody here told me he thought 1957...which would be cool, as that would make it a birth year gun for me. Paid $200.

At $200 I'd say you did well on that gun, even with the non-correct grips. I'll bet it is a great shooting revolver.

Butt Swivel is Original
My letter arrived today and my gamble paid off. It turns out the gun was an over run of a special police order and was shipped with the butt swivel (landyard loop) to a sporting goods store in Chicago. SN: C491701 shipped on August 15, 1960.
For those interested, the turn around for the letter was 14 weeks.
Now to find some correct PC Magnas for it.
