Yesterday at the gun show...
We had two shows to visit in one day, so we got to the first one at the opening bell...I zeroed in a K-22 Masterpiece right away, which was priced about as expected...However, the grips on it convinced me I should not leave the table without it...I didn't quibble much as others were lurking, so a quick negotiation and cash transfer and off I went...Naturally everyone knowledgeable afterward wanted to know if I was selling it or the grips...A polite "no" was the answer in each case...
Until I can get a shipping date, the serial number points to 1951...Excuse the quick, pre-cleanup cell phone pics, and your thoughts will be valued... ...Ben

Nice looking gun. The grips are better looking.

The stocks look like a set I bought from another member, but the checkered panel on yours looks a bit wider.

Thanks for the kind comments, fellows...The plan now is to clean it up a bit and show it off at the upcoming Conroe gun show this weekend...Whether it will wear those same grips is yet to be determined as I don't believe they are original equipment... ...Ben

Great find, and a smart move by acting quickly. It probably would not have lasted long. I lived in the DFW area in the 90's and the Texas gun shows were always fun. Pawn shops were plentiful as well. Cash America's HQ was in Ft. Worth. Texas is where I got started in collecting guns. Never got to the Conroe or Houston shows but I'm sure they are just as good as DFW. Those non-relieved K targets are the bomb.

That brings up an interesting question...When I got it home, and pulled the grips off, the medallion fell out of the right panel...The medallions are not bradded on either panel, and with the washers (stamped as shown, not solid) look brand new...Everything else about the grips looks absolutely S&W to my admittedly poor eyesight...What do I actually have here?... ...Ben

Grips
Your washers are the same as all the grips washers, all were stamped. It appears your grips missed a process in their assembly, the medallions were not peened over to hold everything in place. Look at the grip pic in post #3. The end of the medallion is peened over. The non-relieved targets were made before the Cokes and probably harder to find but do not command the price of the Cokes!

Thanks, I've never seen the washers off the grips before, and just thought they might be solid...I don't know how the peining would take place, and since the medallions react to a magnet, they are ferrous...But my hands are not steady anymore, and I am not going to risk damage to valuable grips with a hammer and punch...Therefore, my idea is to reassemble and secure with a drop of gorilla glue...I'm just thankful the medallion chose to wait until I got home to fall off, and not while I was walking around the gun show with it stuck in my belt... ...Ben

The medallions do not typically react to a magnet, at least mine do not (just checked). Do you mean the washers?
I believe there were some fairly rare stocks with steel medallions, made for a short time, or so I read in this forum.

Yes. Both steel and plastic were used briefly during the Korean Conflict in the early 1950s. Nickel was a strategic metal, so supply was restricted for a time.
All of my experience with those temporary measures are with K frame stocks, but it isn't a stretch to think they might have been used on N frames, even I frames, as well. I just don't know. Someone else here might.

Well, that's not correct. The early washers on Magna stocks (1930s and into the 1940s) were machined steel. The stamped steel washers showed up just after WWII.
Here's a photo of the machined washers on a pair of early K frame Magna stocks:

Both the medallions and washers are attracted to the magnet (the medallions to a slightly lesser degree)...Jack, given the era of the gun and stocks, the war effort could further verify authenticity here...From my earlier pics, it can be seen that the stocks have been installed for some time, but maybe not that particular gun...How the medallions survived without falling off before this is baffling... ...Ben
