I just acquired this box that came with another model HE and is not matching to the gun...
It is my understanding that it is for a Transitional Model Post War Outdoorsman...
Can someone comment on its rarity?...Value?
I would probably attempt to trade it for an original box for a Commercial pre-war M1917 .45, but not sure if both are equal in value and rarity..
Thanks!

It is rare, but probably less so than a .45 Army Commercial box of the pre-war era production-wise.

This gun is in the database on the SWCA side and the owner is a prominent member of the forum :)

PM sent to OP....they need to reunite

Way cool. I never even thought to look over there. I rarely go to that side for any reason, plus I am having a hard time with the data base lately.

Good heavens! One hears about cases where a separated box and gun have both been found, but I thought it always happened to other people.

Kris, thanks for putting Val in touch with me. I'm sure we will find a way to do a deal.

EDITED TO ADD PIC:

This is the gun that once lived in that box and I hope will do so again. The stocks are a little more recent than the gun, which like almost all postwar transitional ODs shipped in 1946 (a few are known that shipped in 1947). One of the things that drew me to this one is the Red Bead King Reflector out front.

It's a very accurate revolver.

You'll have to trust me on the serial number. I don't have a photo of that. :D

Just a quick update:

Val and I had a good conversation and quickly came to terms; the box and a proper consideration are crossing in the mail as I write this. Within a few days I should be able to post a photo of the happily reunited couple.

My thanks again to Kris, who called this box to my attention and put Val in contact with me, and of course to Val himself.

This couldn't happen to a nicer person.

Nice, my foot. I'm an irritated old gun-and-truck guy with a bad S&W jones who is not even faithful to his main addiction and has spent some good moments with the occasional Colt. And don't any of you forget it.

But thanks, Peter. And I will be traveling in the next few months, so please reserve a shooting station at the gun club and we'll punch some paper. :D

Well, David, even if you are a grump, I'm still glad this happened to you! This is right up there with me finding the original stocks for that postwar M&P a few months ago. Just wonderful when this type thing happens!
