Default Help Identifying model number

Hello everyone I am a new member, just signed up today. And a first time revolver owner. I got this revolver from a friend of mine. There is no model number behind the yoke. It is a hand ejector revolver. The serial number on the butt is S 1014XX. Its a .357 caliber, 6 inch barrel, With adjustable rear sights. I was curios about the model number. And if possible anyone can tell me what year it was made. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We need a bit more info;
Are there any markings on the barrel besides caliber?
What are they?
Where are they on the barrel?
Are there any markings on the grip frame under the stocks?
Detailed photos would be a big help.

Larry

Welcome! The combination of the S serial number prefix and chambering make this a .357 Magnum; after 1957 it was called the model 27. If the barrel is stamped .38 S & W Special on the right side it was altered from another model.

It likely shipped in late 1953 to early 1954. You may find it has a 6.5" barrel if it is original. Hope this is helpful.

Sure looks like a .357 Magnum. That is its name. Some will call it a "pre-model 27."

It has a good deal of holster wear and looks like some nimrod rounded off the front sight blade for fast draw. Holsters with sight tracks had not been invented in the 1950s.

Spolzin, welcome to the forum. Your revolver has a good deal of wear but, assuming it is mechanically sound, it will be a great gun for you. Many consider the pre-27 to be one of the finest revolvers ever made. It was a revolver exactly like that which got me interested in vintage S&Ws and away from 1911s many years ago.
