Default S&W Older model 38

I am new to the forum and would like some help in determining the age/type of a handgun I inherited and the value range. It appears to be a 3 in barrel. On one side of barrel it has 38 S and then W.CTG. On other side of barrel it has Smith & Wesson. The number 254420 appears on bottom of pearl grip and on inside of gun. It is a 5 shot. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a 38/32 Terrier.

Yes. The cartridge designation (.38 S&W CTG), five shot cylinder and the serial number would point to a Terrier, shipped after model numbering started. It should be marked Model 32.
The pearl stocks are unlikely to be original.

Welcome to the S&W forum.

That # is way too high for any 38 S&W and Terriers are only 2". It could be a model stamped 38 from '61 and you mean 38 S&W Special.

Yes, we also get used to thinking in terms of HEs because we're in the HE section. We have to think outside the box more.

Back to the original question - If it is a S&W top break, it could be a .38 DA, third model, ca. early 1890s, or a .38 Safety Hammerless, fifth model, ca. 1930s. I don't think any of the .38 single actions had SNs that high. Pictures would help. And the question should be posted in the "Antiques" area of the forum.
