Welcome to the forum!
That's a great 1st thread! She's a real creampuff! One of the very first limited production run of 312 Chiefs Spl Targets, Model of 1953, 4 screw, with early hammer.
Read more limited runs of Targets here: CHIEFS SPECIAL TARGETS - Smith & Wesson Forum
Anyone who knew what that was would have grabbed it for $1000 w/o even thinking about it. How much better than that did you do?

Welcome to the S&W Forum... what a way to make an entrance!
As a lover of old Chief's Specials and a former collector of High Standards, I would say you did more than well... you did fantastic! In the right market, each of the items you bought would probably bring what you paid for the pair, and folks would be glad to get them. Enjoy shooting them and stop by to visit often. BTW, nice job on the pictures, too. They showed your Chief to its best advantage.
Regards,
Froggie

Very sweet! I've given up long ago the idea of owning one of these little gems, but I'd sure like to have the opportunity.
I'm happy for you.

A REALLY neat J-frame. That is a "wanta" grail gun for me.

Congratulations. A beautiful gun and a steal of a price! Just a year ago I bought an early M36 Target (99% gun but no box) for $1400. I paid a high price but there are some guns that show up so seldom that you just have to bite the bullet when they appear.
Before I bought it I consulted with Roy and other advanced collectors here and they all advised me to go for it.

WOW!!!!!!
Did you at least kiss him first, or pay his cab fare home?
I'd call that a screamin' good deal.
Bravo. Way to make an entrance.
I like square butt J frames.
Then again, I like square butt Smiths, period.

These guns came in with a batch of about 25 or so guns from the mid 50s to early 60s. Earlier from the same batch I acquired a 22-32 Kit gun in the box, and a Hi Standard 101 USMC Property Target Pistol along with an unmodified Cadet Martini. I do online work for this shop and I get to cherry pick the guns. I have picked some great stuff over the years. Thanks for all the nice comments. I have a S&W collection of about 50 guns from the number one up to a couple from the 80s or 90s.

Numbered?
Hey Mike
Are the grips and the box numbered to the gun. $1000 would be a low number for that beauty! My data base has a serial number about 35 below yours that was shipped in Mar 1955. Thanks for the great pics!

I am soooooo jealous :: just kidding :: I have the earliest known CST SN 550xx. I NEVER found one with the original box. A warm and hearty CONGRATULATIONS !! if you want out of a hefty profit, let me know. I've done much research on the early CST boxes. Can you include a picture of the complete bottom of the box. Should have a T on it somewhere and perhaps a few more numbers.

I looked over the entire bottom and could find no additional markings. All I know is the gun came in from a relative of the deceased owner along with about 25 other guns. Nearly all dated to the late fifties and early sixties. Some of the Smiths were factory engraved with his initials and in the original boxes marked "ENGRAVED". He was obviously an collector of nice guns in this time frame. I also got a nice 22/32 Kit Gun from this collection. The others were sold by the shop on Gunbroker. The rifles are supposed to come in!

Thats a very nice CST. Should you ever decide to sell, I collect guns with multiple 5's in the serial number. Just happened to fall into several with either 55 or 555 in the number and the rest as they say is history. Like I needed another excuse to collect S&W's.

You have a Factory Chief Special Target, Serial Number 17xx with a bobbed hammer ? I'd love to see photos of it. If it is a factory target that is odd in that serial number range. And yes, I agree. It makes no sense a Target sighted revolver with a bobbed hammer. Can you either post pictures of it here or email them to via email if you'd rather not post pictures here for some reason. My email link on the Forum is live. If you send me pix it will be kept strictly confidential if you request. Thank you. Sal ( MODEL3SW )

Welcome to the forum.
The #17XX would have to be on the gun butt to be the serial #.
Or could yours possibly have some letters before the number?
What is the barrel length?
