Default M&P 38 special question

Just got this on trade, I believe it is a Pre model 10, Gen 2 M&P and wanted to verify before putting it in the case for sale.

I appreciate any input/help, so thank you in advance

serial number is 540304, and the number on the crane is 56004

Want to be positive of what it is before I put it out so I have everything correct

Thanks again for looking, and sharing any knowledge

The gun is a .38 Military & Police that shipped circa 1926. The M&P evolved from its first design in 1899. In 1957 it was assigned a Model 10 designation . . . but retained the Military & Police name.

Some folks call any M&P before 1957 a "pre-Model 10" but you'll find collectors reserve the pre-10 designation for those made after mid-1948 when all the design features were the same as those that were stamped MOD 10 in 1957.

Put .38 Military & Police on the tag and you can't go wrong.

Russ

P.S. not familiar with the term Gen 2 but you can also refer to this gun as a Model of 1905 - 4th change.

P.S.S. the grips on the gun are post-WWII magnas . . . this gun should have service style grips with no medallion.

I was told it was "second change"

I termed it Gen 2 just for descriptive purposes

Book is showing between 800 to 1475 value you wise, seems like a lot.

I priced it below that at $750...............is that fair?

Someone probably mistook the assembly number (56004) for the serial number, a common occurrence.

The 1905 4th change was made in larger quantities than the earlier versions (about 760,000 between 1915 and '40). It is hard to see the fine details of this one, but the finish appears worn and possibly refinished based on the sideplate gap, so I think $750 is high.

Nice shooter grade 38 M&P, but no collector value there. With the wrong stocks and lots of finish loss, value would be much lower than $750. These M&Ps in similar condition sell for under $350 frequently.

The correct stocks would be diamond walnut round top convex (outward rounded top) with no medallion. These would be correct for 38 M&Ps from 1920-1929.

Good. No way is it a $750 gun, and I'd agree that around $350-375 is correct, as there is no collectible value in its present condition.. It probably shipped in 1927 from that SN, and the non-original grips have already been mentioned. Name-wise, it's simply an M&P. The factory did not use the Model of 1905, 4th Change nomenclature after WWI. But it's the same gun.

Nice old .38. But DON'T shoot it whatever you do or you'll never sell it.

Hi
I'm glad others talked you down from $750. I think you'd have a very hard time selling it for that much with the finish loss it shows on the barrel, frame boss and sideplate. Also, the stocks on it come from no earlier than about 1952.
Given the serial number, I believe it is unlikely this gun shipped as late as 1927. The revolver shown below has a serial number less than 9,000 lower than yours and it letters to February, 1926.
I'm posting a photo so you can see what the correct stocks look like.
