Default HE: Penciled grip serials?

This is a follow-up question about the HE 1905 .32-20 I posted about the other day.
Serial number is 606xx. The grips appear period-appropriate for the 19-teens, wear fits the rest of the gun, and the way they were "rust-baked" to the frame, they've been on it for a long time. However, there is no evidence of a penciled serial number on either of the inside panels, just the funky initials. Of course, someone could have gone to the trouble of erasing it, but why bother? So my question is, would the absence of the number mean that these were not original, or how consistent was the factory with the numbering back then? Thanks!

Sometimes the pencil numbers just fade out over time.
If they fit perfectly, with no over lap or gaps, they're probably original.

A penciled serial, if still present and not faded away as JayCeeNC mentions, will be on the right-side stock, usually between the top of the grip and the screw hole, and sometimes you'll have to tilt the grip around in some light before you'll be able to see it.

If they were as you said baked on, the penciled numbers probably faded.
