Default Model 29 gunshow find.

Hi Folks,

Was at the local gunshow today walking the crowded isles and trying to forget about a nice model 27 that I had missed out on. Was thinking that maybe I would get lucky and find something else. Not really. I was thinking I blew it and my day was ruined.
But I roamed around and purchased a nice k-38 sporting some really nice Sanderson target grips for a great price and then was talking with a freind when I spotted this.
It is a Model 29 no-dash with a ser# S1845xx. I think I remember reading somewhere that the long barrelled 29's started somewhere in the S184xxx range. If so this may be one of the first long snout 29's to have ever been made.
It was wearing goodyears and I just happened to have this set of coke's waiting for such a gun.
The price was $575 with the old rig thrown in. The man had paid for his bro-in-law's funeral and his sister gave him some guns to recoup some of the money. This was one of the guns.
I gladly paid him his price and ended up comming home with 2 really nice s&w's.
It has a few dings here and there and just a little muzzle wear but not too bad overall. I think the serial # puts it in the 1958 year range.
The last picture shows the k-38 i picked up today also.

Your Model 29 probably dates to early 1959.

Thank you Doc,
I was guessing at 1958. Was I correct about the 8 3/8 guns starting around the serial number of this gun? I think it was one of your old threads that I remember this info from.

Looks like to me you paid for the "Cokes" and the rig and got the gun for free!! Great grab.

You should stop going to gun shows. Everyone here knows they only sell beef jerky, beanie babies, Tshirts, jewelry and stuff. Not only that but everything else is overpriced junk. The vendors are grumpy and the other customers smelly. I have no idea how you scored the jewels out of the show. But you did admit you missed on a M27. Instead of gloating about your scores, you should follow the program and complain incessantly.

Most of the rest of us have discovered that most gun shows have great things. But you've got to have cash money and an open mind to find them. You did good, but if you had kept it to yourself, the aisles would clear out for your next adventure. The complainers could then go to the LGS which has a total of 5 used revolvers, mostly Tauri and Rugers. Now they'll be confused as to where to go next to develop a tale of woe. Those of us going to the gun show won't have you to worry about until you build up your cash stockpile in a few months.

Now you didn't need to start using bad words. Remember, many of us are retired (retarded, who knows). For the dedicated, there's a great show next weekend in Wilmington. You've got to be a member or a guest. Lots of us here belong so its not a problem. My now deceased old partner said it was the best show he'd ever been to. I asked why and he said it was big enough and better still, he didn't have a table to tend.

I'm not so sure we want you there, you've now got a bad reputation for scarping up all the outstanding guns.

See, I can never find stuff like this. I must be going to the wrong gun shows, or not going to shows far enough from home or something. I love the old belt and holster, too. Congratulations on two great purchases, but especially on the M29.

Funny how this gun collecting business is a never-ending "sad-sweet" story.....

Somebody dies and, as a result, somebody else gets a nice deal on a gun - either through the widow, a friend of the widow, or through the son, a gun show, etc.

Congrats to all of us (for now); because someday we are all going to cross the "Great Divide". And "they" will rummage through our prize posessions as we have gone through those of others before us, which just goes to prove the statement: "We don't own these things; we simply pay a deposit to be the caretaker for a few years". Hopefully, our heirs gets back the deposit, and a few bucks more. Eh?

I love gun collecting, and this is just part of it - like going from one chapter in a book to the next. Someday, someone may glee over the great deal they got on a piece of my stuff....... I know I have been guilty of doing the same without thought, nor reverence, to the deceased and his passion for collecting on whatever budget he had.

And, I have congratulated those of my friends who got a "great deal" through the same situation, without a single thought of what joy in collecting lay behind the feelings of the former owner. He was dead; his guns were on the market..... that's all we cared about. Frankly, we were simply thrilled that the guns were on the market.

Guys.... we ought to congratulate those who were before us, and who had the foresight to preserve/collect these pieces before we were even on the scene - before we congratulate each other for our own funeral bargains.

What I am saying is, I feel there ought to be some kind of feeling of reverence in a find; not just the pure glee we all feel of getting a great deal....... There are two sides to a story like this: the happy one for us and the sad one for others. Let's not forget the sad side; the ending; the loss.

The earliest 44 Magnums (Pre-29s) with an 8 3/8-inch barrel were made in November/December 1958 and have serial numbers in the S184000 to S187000 range. Model 29s with the long barrel began to ship in January 1959 and have serial numbers in the same range. The Pre-29s have a windage adjustment screw with a flat head, whereas, the Model 29s shipped in 1959 have a crowned screw (devil is in the details).

The lowest serial number for a long barreled 44 Magnum (Pre-29) I have seen is in the S177000 range and was shipped in August 1959. It has a crowned windage adjustment screw.

Am I to understand that I should now feel less good about getting a good deal on a nice gun? Sorry , cant do it. I am happy , and I cant feel sad for a person that has passed away that I never met or or even heard his name or story of life even muttered. Sad is a heavy emotion. One I save for freinds and family.
Not to say that I am heartless and dont feel for people that are left behind after a loved one passes. If you have lived on this earth for a decent ammount of time then you(we/all)have had to deal with loosing a loved one or even a close freind.
To feel sorrow for every person that passes weather you know them or not is a depressing way to live life in my opinion. Constant sorrow in that case.
Am I glad I got a good deal on a nice gun? Yes! Am I glad someone passed away for me to have got this deal? No. Can I revere a man I never knew at all in any way? Not sure. Should I revere a man I never knew? Most likely was a great guy with many acheivements in life but I really do not know. It is possible that he may have been the meanest , wife beatinest , sum beach ever walked the earth. These are things I do not know.
When I look at a old revolver I like what it means to me and the ideas I have about it. If you like to look at them and think of those owners from the past then that is definitly O.K. It is just not my thing.
When a gun is sentimental to someone then it is a item that is usually kept close or at least in the immediate family. Once a gun is handed down to members of the family that dont have an attachment to them then they hit the market and we find them and buy them. Just the way it is.
When I look at the gun I will always remember the day I got it and how the day seemed a loss to me until I was fortunate enough to find 2 great old guns to purchase.
I am greatful that the previous owners of all of my guns did such a wonderful job of preserving them and once in my possesion it becomes my duty to do the same for the next owner.
If I die before I wake I pray the lord my s&w's you guys will take. Enjoy them , use them , care for them. Dont feel sad for me , for I enjoyed them too.
I am on this forum to learn and enjoy the finds and wisdom of my fellow S&W collectors. This is a happy hobbie , not one I wish to feel sad about.
I appologize if I have offended any one , not my intention , just my opinion.

Twig.

A long barreled 29 for that price? I'll take five. Where do I send the money?

Very nice pick up. Enjoy.
