Pre Model Marked Combat Masterpiece-Rare in Nickel??
Hello fellow Smithophiles.
I own a pre model marked 4 inch nickel combat masterpiece.
I was told a while back that there were very very few combat masterpieces in Nickel. I believe the number quoted me was about 30 but there are very few survivors.
Do any of you guys have a clue as to whether 4 inch nickel
CM's are scarce or not??

Many thanks

They are definitely uncommon, however considering all the Combat Masterpieces made I would expect more than 30, but that's just my guess. One clue might be what is stamped under the gripes. On some models, like the Model 53, S&W made them all in blue, but if they got an order for a nickel gun, they took a blue gun from inventory and refinished it in nickel. It will letter as shipped in nickel, but it's a refinished gun and not made originally in nickel. If it's factory refinish before being shipped there will be a "N" stamp in a rectangle on the right grip frame. If It is an original nickel gun, the N stamp will be naked, no surrounding rectangle. Ed.

Haris, For some reason I'm thinking the production was around 200 guns. I can't remember my reference, 200 just sticks in my mind.

No, they are as common as can be and worth about a dime a dozen!! Just so you don't get ripped off, I will take it off your hands for $100. I know, I know, I am crazy for offering such an exorbitant price for a common gun, but..................
Really, that is a variety that I don't think I have ever seen before. That is a keeper!!

I have seen a number of police officers and sheriff's deputies carrying nickel CMs, back in the '70s. I imagine most were nickeled post factory.

I had six. I bought and sold them from fellow officers back in the day.
Two had yellow ramp sights, and one had a blue insert. I had them put on for them at Outside Repair at Smith & Wesson, back in the 70's.
