It's a Smith & Wesson Military and Police (M&P) model, ca. 1925. It has period-correct grips on it, and probably original. Keep them with the revolver. There were no significant changes made to the design and mechanics of those revolvers from 1915 to 1945, and after several major changes to the works, it became the Model 10 in 1957. It's as good a revolver as anything you can buy today. It could be easily sold for $350-$400 on today's market in a private sale.

BTW - "CTG" is just S&W's abbreviation for cartridge.

Werlcome to the Forum! I like your humble user name!

You have a nice revolver with what appears to me to be the original finish. Did you measure the barrel from the front of the cylinder? I ask because it looks to me more like a 6 inch rather than 5.

You have what looks to me to be an M&P model, made sometime between 1915 and 1942. My guess from looking at the grips would in the 20s sometime, but smarter folks than me will be along to help soon. I can't help much with the value, but this was S&Ws most popular and prolific model.

Edit: See? DWalt beat me to it!

I don't have one real close but 673082 is from February 1939. These guns were made from 1915 to 1942 in a serial number range of about 250000 to 700000. I would guesstimate yours as early 1930's.

I just picked up a real nice one from 1941 for $575. There were several million of these guns made by S&W over the years so they are not rare. However, a mint in the original box example can still bring big dollars. Run of the mill guns will go from $200 to $400 and nice ones $400 to $6-700.

Yours is probably average for its age with some minor pitting on the barrel and a well worn right stock panel. Stocks numbering to the gun is also a bonus as many old Smiths have had their stocks removed and replaced with wrong numbered versions. Check the back of the right stock panel for any numbers and they should match the butt serial number if original.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys info is great, really didn't even know we still had this found it when I sat in an old chair and something hard was under the seat lol. Think my grandfather used it when he was on Ohio's sheriffs posse Montgomery county area, so it's been in family most likely since it's original sale, sadly I don't have the box or papers for it.

.38 M&P serial number 5315xx letters to February, 1926. So I suspect DWalt is right on the money with his 1925 estimate for shipment of your revolver.
You have to reckon with the Great Depression when estimating the gap from here up into the higher numbers, like 67xxxx. Shipments slowed way down in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Also, I would point to the shape of the extractor rod knob (MERK). These were discontinued on the .38 HE sometime around mid-year, 1927.

Barrel measurement is from muzzle to face of cylinder. It's a 6" M&P.
