Cool 22/32 "Bekeart"

We just got a 22/32 Heavy Target "bekeart" in our store and just wanted to share some info with those that are keeping track with the earlier produced models of this gun.

SN: 164014
Grip#: 1834

I'm not sure if this one was shipped to Bekeart or not and we are not going to have S&W identify it for us.
I do believe it was shipped sometime in late 1912 or early 1913.

Hope this info is useful to someone!

The rear sight is broken off so we're not really sure what price to put on it at the moment.

Welcome to the forum.

That gun is not part of the 294 that were shipped to Bekeart in the 6 shipments in 1911 that are all that he took of his initial order of 1,000. That does not mean however, that it did not ship to Bekeart as part of an additional shipment in later years.

The guns in the first 6 shipments all serial number in the 138,XXX or 139,XXX range. Even those that have those numbers did not all go to Bekeart as they started production at 138,226 and ended with 139,275. As an example, 138,226 did not go the Bekeart.

Your gun is one of the first 3,000 as those were given a stock sequence number that is found on the bottom of the left stock panel. That process stopped at 3,000 and the balance of the .22/32 HFT's do not have a stock sequence number. There is no correlation to the serial number and the stock sequence number as the assemblers merely grabbed a frame and built the gun. The stock sequence number tells you the number in which your gun was assembled and with your example, your gun was the 1,834 th gun assembled.

There are .22/32 HFT's that serial up into the 500,000 range so it encompasses a large block of serial numbers.

Only a factory history letter will confirm if your gun shipped to Bekeart at some later date.

Collectors of the .22/32 HFT or Bekeart model have multiple categories of "Bekeartness".

You have those in the the first 294 that shipped to Bekeart, one of the first 1,000 ordered by Bekeart, one of the first 3,000 with numbered stocks, guns shipped before the gun was cataloged in 1915, guns that later shipped to Bekeart, guns without recessed chambers that occured at around serial 525,600, guns with recessed chambers after 525,600 and so on. It all depends on how technical that you want to be.

The highest stock sequence number that I have recorded to date is gun 208,403 with stock number 2398.

Value is subjective and mainly based on Bekeartness and condition. A poor quality Bekeart shipped gun will fetch a higher price that a better quality later gun. Also a Bekeart marked box will add dramatically to the price. I see them selling from as low as $300-$400 to a high of $2,500. It all depends on what you have and what condition it is in. Hope that helps.
