It sounds like a standard early war (late 1942) issue gun. Having the US Navy rollmark is a plus; not long after yours they were no longer stamped as such. It was the standard issue sidearm for USN/USMC aviators during WW II, and many also went to the Army and civilian organizations for their security forces. About 800,000 (?) of the basic type were produced in .38 Special for the US, and .38 S & W for the British, divided roughly 50:50 in each caliber. These are very popular with military collectors and prices have risen quite a bit recently.
