1930's M&P .38 Target model at estate sale......
Looking at : 6 inch , .38 M&P - 4TH CHANGE. IN MAROON box numbers on the bottom ( same number as a gun) , matching grips and something I have never seem before: a small version of the same screwdriver that was shipped with pre model 29's .44 magnums. Condition of the gun is great but at some point the top of the box got wet and there is very flaking on the barrel . ootherwise looks about 95%. They are asking 850.00 and told me if I don't buy it , I am crazy ( lol). Are they safe to shoot? What's up with a little screwdriver? Its in 650XXX range ( I think). Sights are really small. The box I'd marked on the side : military 38 police blued 6 inch square butt. I took pics with my phone but don't know how to post them

The screwdriver is a sight adjustment tool, or SAT. Prewar SATs are scarce and expensive. If that one is truly a prewar SAT, you should buy the package just to get the tool.
I have .38 M&P Target revolver 649954, shipped June 1935. That gun may have left home about the same time, but the only way to be sure would be to letter it.

Any time you can buy a S$W in it's original box for only $850 and the box contains a $1,000 SAT and you are thinking of passing on it - Don't! Who ever priced this gun at $850 for the estate, just ripped of the heirs for an extra grand. They should pay the Estate an extra $1K out of their pocket for their ignorance! Ed.

Great once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I'm glad for you that you did not delay too long to agree to purchase it. Be sure to post pictures when it gets home. And be sure to show us that SAT.
Congratulations!!!

You did fine in buying it. I certainly would have jumped at it. It's difficult to establish a precise shipping date during the Great Depression without a factory letter. I show one on my list having a SN about 4000 lower which shipped in early 1934. So 1934-35 is likely correct.

You're asking US?
Go over to the Colt or Ruger forums and ask them.
I wonder what the Brady group would say, if you asked them?
Looking forward to pics of your gun and SAT.

Got it! The little SAT feels a little heavy for its size. Cleaning tools look weird. Old i guess.Took a pic with my phone.

You can post pix by transferring them to your computer and then uploading them to the site as attachments to a post. Or, you can email them to me and I'll post them for you. If you have a smart phone, get the app Tapatalk and you can upload them directly from your phone.

You have to think a little outside of the gun box - The "trick" is to stop worrying about stopping buying S&W's.

I think that's because it's worth its weight in gold!

Thank You. I think its a nice one too. Other than the cleaning tools , SAT ( screwdriver) and that yellow paper , what else came in the box with those guns? I also did not know that they numbered the grips and boxes on pre war revolvers. This one also has matching grips. The strange part is that the gun did not see much use .

Beautiful! What a great package.
I have one from the mid 20's that's a great shooter . . .but other than that, it looks like the "poor red headed step child from the wrong side of the tracks" compared to that revolver!
Very nice! Congrats!
