Mystery to me
I am thinking this is a frankengun, but I have a very limited knowledge of pre-model # Smiths. So any input on this would be appreciated.
The information I have from the owner is as follows:
claims this is a 357 mag and is stamped as such on the barrel.
SN: 5d566** off the bottom of the grip frame.
no model # in the crane area of the gun.
this was grandpa's service gun when in LE work.
I am not aware of any pre mdl. Smith 357 that did not have an ejector shroud. (I am no expert and that is why I am posting)
The front sight appears to have been modified to me. the profile does not look right.
There does not appear to be the proper amount of space between the frame and the cylinder face. I am wondering if the forcing cone was recut to allow the 357 cylinder to fit?
based upon the space between the cylinder and the recoil shield, the cylinder is recessed. photo shows pinned barrel.
At this point I am thinking run, don't walk away from this. but it intrigued me enough to seek input from people who know far more than I do

Serial# dates to about 1979. Looks like a Model 13 to me.

Looks like a regular model 13. Mine looks just like that.
There were also model 10 heavy barrel 38spl that were chambered in 357. Flip the cylinder open and on the crane should be a model number like so
See where it says '66'? You should have a 13 or a 10

I am familiar with the model numbers and locations. What puzzled me was that the owner claimed there was not one on the gun even after I asked them to look in the crane area.
Appreciate the input. For the money they are asking, it is a walk away.

The SN provided definitely dates the frame manufacture to 1979. There's nothing it could be other than a Model 13, assuming the original caliber was .357 - but in 1979 it would necessarily have the yoke area model stamping. Therefore, I have no idea what it could be, unless the model stamping has somehow been removed. But what would be the reason for doing that? Walking away is probably a good idea.

That serial SHOULD have a model number (and it should be a Model 13) but I have seen S&Ws with the wrong number many times and a couple times I have seen the number omitted. It happens when humans are making things. If that was the only issue it would be of no consequence to me.
