There was a recent thread in the lounge showing some Keith Brown stocks, most in a Roper style. Keith Brown--Master Stockmaker (pix heavy)

I recently received an order of some stocks by schofieldkid81 (Steve Jesse) so I though I'd show them off. They are in the style of some prewar fleur-de-lis stocks that I bought from the late Ray Brazille at a Tulsa gun show a couple of years ago. Here's a thread about the original stocks. Here are the ones that Steve made for me that duplicated the originals - originals to the left, duplicates on the right:




I like the S&W medallions but they added somewhat to the cost, about $50. I asked Steve to make me a few more sets but modified to omit the medallions. I also wanted a couple in K frame size, which he had not done before.

From back to front:
Triple Lock .44 Target with the original prewar stocks.
Model 24-3 with the first stocks Steve made for me.
Model 27-2 5" with stocks by Steve, no medallions.
Model 19-4 4" with K-frame size stocks by Steve.
Model 14-2 2" with K frame stocks.




Here are Steve's N frame stocks, with medallion and without. In the new set without the medallions he made the center diamond a little smaller:

Those are beautiful! I have stocks by Keith Brown, Roy Fishpaw, and Paul Persinger. I think it is wonderful to see to see another craftsman join these artists! It is a wonderful thing for all concerned. Great!

Those grips look great, Which feel better in the hand. The originals or Schofields?

The originals are relatively thin, and the ones that Steve Jesse (schofieldkid81) made are a tad thicker. Overall I prefer the fit of Steve's reproductions to my hand.

Wow, I almost got really excited! I saw the thread title, clicked on it, and started reading without looking at the date. When I read that Tom had recently received an order from schofieldkid81, I got weak in the knees.😀 I then saw the date.🙁

I ordered a custom pair of Steve’s grips around this time, and a while later, I tried to order some more. Unfortunately, I was too late. Steve just kinda disappeared from here. I tried emailing him to with no success. I always thought he was one of our “up and comers” on the forum. We have had quite a few on the forum. I feel fortunate to own a pair of his grips and value them highly! Here is my pair, with prewar 1/2” silver medallions, made from French Walnut with 20 LPI checking, IIRC. Check out his details.

I too clicked on this link with great hopes that he was active again. I only had one set of his grips, he copied my set of Sanderson combat grips for an N frame. I also had him checker a set of Culina maple grips that I gave to my dad. He really did fine work.

Good gripmakers are a treasure. I recently contacted a couple whose wait times were five years, and another from whom I had ordered a couple of sets years ago, overwhelmed with work is my guess, who did not respond at all.

Dee, of Herretts, who I relied upon for several sets over many years, passed on last year.

My one and only set by Steve Jesse, pre-war style magnas crafted ~2013-2014. Purchased from a forum member in 2021. Presently residing on a transitional Hamilton Bowen 45HD 5".

Great older thread. I found a bunch of $3 grips in a gun shop junk box including a Farrants and also a Hurst pairs. Then there were those butchered cokes that used to look like these beat up K frames there. The late Hugh Clark who was a member here under a name I forgot rebordered, recheckered, and refinished them. They feel perfect and resemble the Schofield Kid’s in shape and size. I traded the Hursts and diamond k frames for the work so I have about twelve bucks in the redone cokes. But they only look right on under 4” guns, to me anyway.

Hugh Clark's handle on the Colt Forum was swamprat if I remrmber correctly. Don't know what his handle was here though. Hugh was
a very well respected member and known craftsman for his grip work
on that forum as I'm sure he was known here as well.

Steve made a pair for me to review. They were a nicely done pair of walnut grips done in homage to the Fitz type target grips. They were nicely done and fit my Project 616 very well. My only regret was that this was one of his earliest pairs and he left them smooth. The checkering he started doing soon thereafter was awesome.
We were in contact for the better part of a year then as they used to sing on Hee Haw, pffft he was gone. I tried a couple of times to reach him again but no joy.

Hugh’s handle was Gatorbaiter on this forum. After he died his sons sold many of his very collectible Colt SAAs on Colt Forum. Hugh left his collection in really good hands. His grip repair was phenomenal. He sent me extensive directions on how to sand and oil grips which I did a couple times with great results.

Here are some before/after pics of a set of fleur de lis grips from a Colt Target New Service (chambered in .44 Russian, so this is a legit S&W post ) that the late Hugh Clark repaired for me. He did great work.
