Pre Model 12 questions
I have an opportunity to buy a Pre Model 12 from 1955. Are these early ones prone to having cracked frames or other damage? What are the weaknesses I should look for? Were the frames & cylinders in different finishes on the nickel ones?
Thanks!

The very early .38 Airweights had aluminum cylinders and should not be fired. A 1955 one should have a steel cylinder but a close inspection (particularly of the thin part of the frame under the barrel) would be advisiable.

I am always suspicious of any Model 12, due to reports of frame cracking at the barrel. I've never personally seen a cracked one (and never owned one), but a very close inspection would be in order if purchase is contemplated.

My pre-12 has the aluminum cylinder. Its serial number is C232962. It does not have any cracks and I do not fire it.

That's the flat-part, at 6 o'clock.
