Yeah, pre-war magnas there. Excellent looking gun. I paid 650 for one that was a just a touch rougher then that (just in the grips) and I felt I got away with murder for it. I'd say 960 is a premium without the box personally, but I've seen so few of them I couldn't tell you for sure.
Ahh found a picture:
I think the trick with these guns is to find one where the seller doesn't know that it is special, I think in the case of yours they know it is, and it's probably worth that much, but I can't really give you much more then my experience.

I think $850 is at least $350 too high.

I think $850 is top dollar. I agree with Sixgun that the dealer knows what he has and it is probably worth the price. It is fun to buy them at a normal "Model 10" price. That's what I paid for this one:

I got a nose bleed when I read the asking price. I think your seller is a bit optomistic by about $400. The example presents well, but longer tube and no box, the value today just isn't there in my opinion.
Upon reflection I will say that within the past 6 years I bought the whole suite of these early guns in 2", 4", 5" and 6" in like condition, with boxes, but with correct, postwar Magnas for $1200.

I have to say, I sort of feel like buying one of these at a premium is buying early, but only because you want the gun.
Some guns I think are good investments, some I'm sure will appreciate. These? As much as mine pleases me on a deep collector level I don't think the differences between this and slightly later pre-10s will justify a broader audience then hardcore collectors and true S&W collectors.
In the end I think the value of these early guns with the pre-war stocks is going to be higher on the right market, but that market is always going to be very small.

Rule #1 is don't fall in love at first sight. There are close to a half-million of the earlier long-action S-series revolvers out there, so there is nothing even remotely rare about them. The price being asked is for one in flawless mint condition with original box and papers, not for one with no box, no paper, and a turn line.

My guess this early m&p shipped with these grips. I can ask them to look for matching numbers. I think the scarce grips should add a 200.00 premium.

Half a million with the pre war magnas?
I always thought they were a lot less common.

Here is a sv prefix I once had with the pre war- postwar magna's numbered to the gun. I think some people here are missing the grip factor on this one. pix892970659.jpg

Without the pre-war magnas in the condition you show I have seen them sell for $650 to $700. With those magnas I would add a premium of $150. This makes it a $800 to $850 gun. Those of you who will only pay $500 are living in a cave without internet access and have no gunbroker. The days of finding guns in this condition at this age are numbered. I think the price is fair!

My database shows the prewar style stocks pretty much disappearing at about S815xxx. Quite common up through S814xxx. And very few shipped after March, 1946.
On the price, this one strikes me as a bit high, even with those stocks and in pretty decent condition. I've regularly been finding these with the box for under $1K (albeit not quite this early and with postwar style stocks).
But it all depends on how badly you want one of these with the early style stocks. Personally, I would not go over $750 for this one. But, hey, my collection of them is at the point that I'm getting picky.
Besides, I took this one home for less than $375, including the prewar stocks that number to the gun:
