Default Model 1905 4th Change

I recently obtained this from a friend as a partial trade. I've known about this gun for some time. I finally had something he wanted more than this. It is in incredible condition for its age. Serial number is 3994xx. As can be seen from the pics the finish is nearly flawless. There is a turn line on the cylinder but is barely visible. I've read the description in the book, but noticed there is no "Made in U.S.A" on the right side of the frame. Book also says square butt is scarce. If anyone can provide an approximate ship date it would be greatly appreciated. All numbers match. The right stock is numbered with pencil, though I can't make it out, even under the best light, so not sure if they are original to the gun. Thoughts, comments, information is welcome!

The best way I've found to read stock numbers is with a flashlight in a dark room. The graphite is kind of reflective in those conditions. Beautiful revolver BTW.

Ken,

That is one beautiful piece!

The trademark on the frame and stocks w/o medallions (if original) make it at least 1920 and the missing "Made in U.S.A" make it pre 1923. Others who keep databases of this model may be able to pin point a bit closer.

Wow... no matter how you slice it, that's just flat out impressive.

Mine is 401735, shipped 3/14/1922... it's nowhere even remotely close to yours in appearance, I won't embarrass it or me by posting a pic.

Yours very likely shipped during the late 1921 to early 1922 period, from others with nearby SNs on my list. I have one which is only a few hundred SNs away, and in approximately the same condition, perhaps slightly better. At that time S&W no longer used the "Model of 1905" nomenclature. Prior to WWI, their advertising began to use the "Military and Police" (M&P) model name. Some collectors use the 1905 designation for all K-frame revolvers made through 1944, as very little in the revolver's design changed between 1915 and late 1944. But S&W itself did not. Regarding stock SNs, I have four pairs of the same 1920's era K-frame stocks. I can see SNs penciled on exactly none of them. Don't worry about it.
The square butt style is by far the most common. That is an unfortunate error in the SCSW.

Hey Ken, that is really sweet. Bring it to the next show so I can hold it in my hands. No pop corn.

I don't believe I've ever seen a nicer early 1920s M&P. Maybe a couple as nice, but never nicer.
Thanks for sharing. I'm sure you enjoy owning that beauty. I would.

It was a good time for 4" M&P's! I've got one very similar just a few numbers away, 399464. Stocks are numbered to the revolver in pencil and fit like they are original. Nice revolver!

VERY NICE! I had a 6" 4th change that shipped June 1919. (lettered) My dad gave it to me in 2009. I gave it to my oldest son around 2 years ago. I did occaisionally take it to the range. Good shooter! Bob
