Beautiful
Way to go for the jugular! Pinto with ivory is a tough hand to beat. In my mind its going to take more than a typical scratched up 29 (27, 25, 57, etc) to knock you off the top of the heap. Now if Doc or someone drops a fully engraved Pinto wearing ivory on the table, you're toast. I hadnt seen one yet but some of these guys must have a safe 6' deep.

The old saying is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
My preference leans towards those that have seen the Elephant, rather then the ones who have lived their life in a dark sock drawer.
Hand held history.

I'm still voting for Carbon's 44 Target in post #2. Understated, elegant, rare, perfection. This is a democracy, right?

I sure do. I dig the rope engraving on the nickel piece,
Being a native of the Fort Worth area, I should've acquired W&K 3rd model years ago. Now they're too $$$.
I'm gonna need a cold shower after viewing this thread:-)

Here're my humble entries. The 24-3 doesn't really qualify as old school, kinda like a married Miss America:

In order to judge fairly, contestants must come down to Texas for the talent competition, which could take some time.
Must bring their own ammo, too.

SixgunStrumpet,
I agree, especially the top one which MIGHT be the only one I could come close to affording! I, too, enjoy finding an older, maybe gently mistreated revolver to shoot and enjoy.
Could you or someone enlighten me about the screw or pin underneath the cylinder latch? What it's purpose is/was and maybe what era it signifies? An uneducated (but getting better since here) fellow would appreciate it.

I'm a K frame collector, so I don't have that many N frame revolvers, and most of those I do have are new enough to have model numbers. In fact, when you add the qualifier "old" or "old school" that gets me down to only three that I've had at one time or another, and two of them were not as old as I am. Nevertheless, I'll go ahead and post pictures. The odd thing is that both of the older N frames shown here had been given front sight modifications before they came into my possession. However, except for the front sight, they were unaltered and both are wearing their original, numbered stocks.
Edit: Sorry, I just realized I forgot to mention the missing lanyard swivel on the .455. That is one more thing that is not original about it, but the hole is still there, as is the cross-pin that held the swivel in place.
.455 from the UK with no export markings:
.357 Magnum 6" from May, 1952:
The third one I once owned was a 4 screw .44 Magnum 6 1/2" revolver that dated from very early 1957. But, alas, I have no pictures of it that I can find.

It is actually not a pin, but the end of the hammer pivot stud, and it forms the axis upon which the hammer pivots from the uncocked postion to cocked and back.
On the early guns shown here, the stud was threaded into the frame and the rounded end shows through in the small divot below the cylinder release.
In the postwar period (late 1940s) this was replaced with a stud that pressed into the frame, and from that time forward, it is polished flat to the frame on the gun's left side. Sometimes you can barely see the outline of it, but most often the blue or nickel finish hides it pretty well and it is virtually invisible.
The change was made first on the K frame guns, with the management order being issued on January 18, 1946. I've not been able to identify the date of the change order for the N frames, but well-informed sources here on the Forum assure me it was later.
I hope this helps.

My entry, Ms. New Brockton of 1926. This contestant is a .44 2nd model and hails from L.A. (lower Alabama, and no offence to the wiregrass guys). So far she looks to be somewhere around 30th runner up, but the beauty contest has only just begun.
That's a beauty mark on the left side of the trigger.

JP@AK,
Thank you for the information, Jack (I was pretty sure it was not a misplaced key lock thingy!) I will now have to run downstairs and check my K22 (1948) and K38 (1950) more closely.

Howdy
Triple Lock Target Model
Triple Lock Nickel
44 Hand Ejector, 4th Model (pre-model 24)
Model 27 (yes, that is the box it came with)
But this one is one of my favorites.
44 Hand Ejector 3rd Model (Model of 1926) shipped in 1929.
Carried by an officer through WWII.
Refinished, not by S&W.
Original grips very badly worn.
I love this funky old gun.

I would expect both of those to have a pressed hammer pivot stud.
Here is a photo of two M&P revolvers from the 1946-48 period. The top one shipped in March, 1946, and has the threaded stud. The other one shipped in January, 1947, and has the pressed stud.

Well, it was refinished at the factory in 1942 and the grips are replacements, but how about the oldest known 1926 3rd Model .44 Special? The first 1926 was serial number 28358 and this one is 28363, shipped to Wolf and Klar on January 27, 1927, one of 75 5" nickel revolvers.
