Long Tube Frenzy - Interesting .357 Magnums (Pic Heavy)
I've taken a liking to the long tube .357's over the past year or two, and have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to pick a few up that are scarce and/or interesting.
Registered Magnum #741, shipped from the factory on 2/3/36 with an 8 3/8" barrel, blued finish and 1/10" King Red Post/square notch rear. This is an interesting piece in that it has the name M.J. Shearer engraved on the sideplate - and the engraved portion is the work of R.J. Kornbrath. Also interesting to note that this was a two gun shipment - the other gun was engraved with the name of Harry Snyder. See attached photo of the letter:
Pre-Model 27, 8 3/8" barrel with a pinto finish. Serial number S108286 was shipped in November, 1954.
A cased pair of pre-27 8 3/8" revolvers. S91413 & S91423 shipped to Rex F/A, NYC, April 28, 1953. These guns are paired together in a Rex Firearms case, and come complete with red ramps, standard triggers & target hammers - as well as smooth target stocks.
Model 27-1, 8 3/8" blued. According to Mr. Jinks: "Morgan, Model 27-1 serial number S221369 you have your choice of when it was shipped as it is listed as a double numbered revolver. The dates are May 1962 or January 1963"
Finally, a factory nickel 8 3/8" pre-27, complete with box. Serial #S139563.
Sorry for the pic overload. Hope you enjoy looking!

I was never a long tube fan, but they have really grown on me lately.
This thread certainly helps, which will end up hurting my wallet

Great guns!!! You are speaking my language! It is my opinion that people who do not like the long 357's have never shot them. Over the years I have collected my share of "collectible" long tube 357's, BUT when I go to the range - this is the one that comes with me (a worn pre-27, that has had a Nelson Ford action job and since the photos below were taken, now sports a gold bead McGivern front sight) ...
It is well on its way to becoming a "pinto" - more the "splotchy" variety as most of the bluing on the barrel and cylinder is thinning and wearing off...
Thanks for sharing,

That is my take on it as well. The balance with the 27's tapered barrel on the N frame is just about right for offhand shooting, better than it is on the long .41s and 44s with their heavier contoured barrels. That coupled with the long sight radius makes them great for long range shooting.

Fabulous set of N frames Morgan! I like the narrative as a whole; perhaps an engraved long tube next?

I for one love the long tube revolvers, only have 2 with less than 6" and one 6", every thing else 8 3/8" and a couple of 10" Dan Wessons.
Nice collection!

Was looking through this post again (thanks Morgan) and decided that it needed a bump to the top with a few more pre-war 357 long-tube beauties...
Non RM with a hump-back hammer and a fairly uncommon 8.375" Barrel:
RM 2394 with a fairly uncommon 8.375" Barrel:
RM 4405 with a common 8.75" Barrel:
Shooter grade, factory refinished RM 3261 that shipped to King Gun Sight Co with an 8.75 barrel, King cockeyed hammer and KB Kearsarge stocks (side note - this was my first long tube gun and my first RM...price was $900 shipped ):

Incredible guns every one. Cannot understand the shift to 3-4 inch barrels, like streamlining a tank. Wish they would have made a 10 5/8 like 29-3 in the 27. longer is better.

I like longer barrels in all calibers, from .22LR to .44 Mag. Sadly, no Registered Magnums. Yet. (The Pinocchio snout on the far end is a 15" Dan Wesson .357.)
Click pics for a larger version.
*edit* - Oh, left one out. The seldom-seen 8-3/8" .44 Special. Seldom seen because they didn't make any (that I know of). I had Andy Horvath build this one for me out of a Model 27 barrel and a beater Model 28.

How about an 8 3/8" "357 Magnum" that shipped from the factory on 04/19/51 to Jesse Harpe Co, Tampa Florida. An early shipped 8 3/8" made using a pre-war 8 3/8" barrel and shipped in a Registered Magnum Box, numbered to the gun (stocks are not original)

Do you have the background information on these two guns from SWHF? I ask because I'm confused by the pricing ($43.64 per gun). RM's #'s 643 644, and 645 were (also) shipped to Chicago, albeit billed to Shapleigh Hardware (St. Louis). Shapleigh's cost (as a S&W distributor) was $47.04 per gun.
Confusing things----------------------
The retail price of these guns was $60.
Who/what is Harry Snyder---and how come he buys at less than distributor price?
Or does he? An interesting bit on Shapleigh's order reads (in part) as follows: "------making the returns payable to us." So what's a "return"---a quantity discount perhaps (??)----which Harry gets up front perhaps (??)----and like that.
Given that S&W knows who did the inlays (and the fact they were done) strongly suggests the guns were initially shipped to Kornbrath "in the white". Is Harry's price discounted accordingly? Does the payment to Kornbrath include a charge for the post engraving/inlay finishing?
I could go on, but confusion reigns supreme enough for now.
Ralph Tremaine
A perhaps interesting/telling tid-bit: The difference in price (Shapleigh vs. Harry) is $3.40----which is EXACTLY a 7% discount off Shapleigh's price (prior to "returns"). Number stuff which works out to EXACTLY anything suggests something other than coincidence-----a good thing----because I'm not much on coincidence.
