I recently answered an add in the local Armslist for a set of S&W stocks that were being sold at a surplus store here in Reno. I couldn't tell much from the picture, but they were a set of diamond magnas and that was all I needed to see to make me go down and check them out.
Turns out they were for a N frame and the serial number stamped inside said they were from around 1956. For $7.95 I bought them on the spot and while I was paying for them, my son joked that I was going to have to buy a gun to go with them.
Fast forward two days later and I was in a LGS looking, as I always do, at the orphan Smiths in the used gun case. There on the bottom shelf was a second model .44 hand ejector in .455.
I have been looking for an early N frame and what drew me to this poor gun was the fact that it hadn't been modified to shoot .45 Colt or .45ACP. It is a tight as a new gun and mechanically it is perfect. All numbers matched and the only downside was the hideous plastic target stocks that were on it.
Using the fact that it was somewhat finished challenged and the missing original stocks as bargaining leverage, I was able to pick it up for a somewhat reasonable price.
Looks like I did have to buy a gun to fit those diamond magnas.
I am looking for a set of the correct stocks for it, so if anyone knows of another source besides ebay or Gunbroker, please let me know. I don't need a pristine set, but would prefer to get something that matches the condition of the rest of the gun.
Proof marks show that it was a Canadian issue piece and there is no release from service stamps like the British like to do.
