Default Please Help Identify

Although the information has already been put out there, I was hoping for some additional help. Cant decide if this is something to carry and shoot or keep locked up. I am afraid the blueing/finish ruined any value. Want to know approx. year and model/type.

DETAILS:

no model number behind yoke, just assembly number

it is a hand ejector

SN on butt reads S951XXX

38 Special

Barrel is about 6 inches (sorry, just ballpark)

Hand ejector fixed sight

There is a strain screw, it has 5 screws (one under grip), and the matted finish is really rust resistant, almost like an AR15.

I'm not seeing any bluing, looks more like a parkerized finish?

Grips are not original but look to be nice.

Definitely a shooter and not a safe queen.

Definitely refinished.I'm thinking that it's a post war M+P,later to be known as a Model 10.I believe that the grips are from a N frame gun, hence the overhang on your K frame gun.

It looks like a phosphate finish S-Series Military and Police model, with shipment around late 1947. The phosphate (or whatever it has) finish is not original, nor are the grips. Just a shooter-grade specimen with no collectible value, worth maybe $250-$300.

Hi
The frame dates to about November, 1947. However the gun has been significantly altered. The barrel has almost certainly been replaced. You should check to see if there is a serial number on the bottom of it (on the barrel flat). If the barrel is original, the front sight has been re-shaped.
Also, the extractor rod is not correct, and the machined notch on the bottom of the barrel does not appear to be correct, but was machined out to fit the large extractor rod knob. That knob is incorrect for this serial number. The small knurled end had been fully implemented by the time serial numbers reached as high as S951xxx. The highest original one I've identified was on serial number S903568, and there are lots of knurled ends that show up on earlier numbers before that one.
As others have said, this gun has been refinished and is wearing incorrect stocks as well.
This revolver would be a perfectly good shooter, but it has no collector value at all and keeping it locked in the safe would really make no sense.
Thanks for showing it to us.

Also, would you please send me a PM with the full serial number so it can get included in my tracking spreadsheet on the postwar M&P revolvers? No ownership information will be stored - just configuration data and serial numbers. Thanks.
