1954 Highway Patrolman range gun
I've been looking for an pre 1980 N frame 357 four inch with target hammer and trigger, red ramp front sight and white inlay rear with magna grips as a utility/range gun for out back.
I found this shooter today. It's a first year (1954) five screw, HP with nice 1950's fit and finish. Cylinder, barrel and frame all matching numbers. Grips are not.
It has been bright blued and has a 27 rear sight. No redo stamps by the S&W factory but it looks good, locks up tight and has very few rounds through it. Just enough wear that I won't mind using the heck out of it.

Spectacular find. For a reblue that is awfully nice. Too nice for a range gun...

What a nice old 28. And S&W or not, someone did a fine re-blue. That's too darn nice to be a "range gun"

I'd almost bet that letters to an employee or open on the books. I think it looks really good. Long shot but could be original finish. Maybe an employee wanted a pre27 but couldn't afford it so he improvised

Kris, the more I look at it, the more I think it could be a possibility. It is surely a carbona bluing and is the same luster and shine as my other pre numbered N frames.
I think I may just send for that letter.

The seams in the side plate look very good as do the rollmarks to my eyes. If it is a refinish, I would definitely like to know who did it!!

Sweet shooter !
Pictured below (left) is your HP's sibling just 71 digits lower,
Probably a safe bet they were on the assembly line together way back in 1954...

I believe that is a very early HP. The finish looks to my feeble eyes to possibly be factory original. 410bore may have hit the nail on the head... I think I'd invest the $50 and time for a letter.

After looking at the trademark and the lettering on the barrel I'm
going to cast my vote for a high quality re-blue. It is a very nice
revolver in any event. I would be happy to own it.

Hard to say if it's a factory blue or a re-blue. Some pictures make me think it could be factory, and the picture of the right side plate makes me think it's been re-blued. I'd invest the $50, just for ****s and giggles.
Either way, it's an awesome gun that I'd be very happy to call my own. Congrats on a great find.
