Default got my 1954 model 28 back!

[IMG][/IMG]

2 years ago i traded my first year model 28 off to my good friend for a beautiful 1955 336 marlin sporting carbine in 30-30 first year factory d&t for scope and has ballard riffling.

but today i traded him a 38 and a rough no 4 enfield and some ammo for my model 28 back. she will not leave home again!

it has Patrick grasshorn grips, and a tyler T grip shown in one photo.

Very nice HP!

I would have been tempted to trade for the 336 SC also; I have one from 1952 (I believe) with the waffle top. nice guns......

Cool story...and before someone else says it, you have a .357 Highway Patrolman, which became the model 28 in 1957. Does your friend still have the Marlin?

A Model 28 made in 1954? That's a rare gun.

That's cool your friend remained a friend and traded a favourite back to you.
I have a 28-2 and also a 1949 Marlin 336 no D&T waffletop.

That’s a pristine Marlin “SC” and beautiful pre-Model 2! Either one I’d surely be proud to own and even better... Both! My own Pre 28 in the 120K range is close, but no first year ‘banana’!

Re the Marlin 336 genre, my impression for years of very nice guns and great market sleepers. During that long sleep, I managed to ‘accumulate’ some nice ones. Of course that sleeper era per se largely passed. The so-called untapped “waffle top” (wavy striations atop) 336 Models from 1948-53 (untapped through '54) tend to lead the collectible range by sheer era.
I pretty much watched for the Model 336 in 35 Remington chambering... 'Where no Winchester has gone before'. Still have some nice Marlins as well as nice Smiths! Both fine guns!

My take

Nice HP! SOMEDAY, I will stumble on some reasonably priced stag grips! I probably would not like the feel though as I use mostly target stocks. Enjoy your Smith back again! Bob

You could call it a "Pre-28" but some object to that terminology as well.

Whatever its proper designation, it is in superb condition for its age. I looked at the pictures before I read the text and I thought "got it back" meant that you got it back from a skilled refinisher.

I don't know what your "reasonably priced" stag grips criteria is, but Pat Grashorn's grips are a real deal. I thought mine were exceptionally well priced!
And thanks for the Marlin pics...they're almost always drool-worthy.

Congratulations on the return of your very nice HP. Things like that when traded away don't always come home when you wish you had them back. I think you are very lucky.
