Default Year and value of this .38 revolver

Was curious about any info/value about this .38 revolver. I'll attach as many pictures as I can (your eyes are probably better than my words)

If you could, please post the serial number located at the bottom o of the frame under the stocks/grips. It kinda shows in one picture, but the lanyard is covering it up a bit. If you don't want to post the whole thing, use X for the last 2 digits. Include the letter at the beginning. It's S38 something.

I enlarged the serial number image, and it appears the first character is an 8, not an S; the serial number is 838xx0.

That makes it a British Service Revolver in .38 S&W (not .38 Special) from about 1941. S&W made a few hundred thousand of these between 1940 and 1945 for Commonwealth countries. As a shooter, it should probably be valued around $300. Some of these were converted to .38 Special after the war by boring the chambers a little deeper to take the longer cartridge. Collectors regard this as reducing the value of the gun because it is no longer original. Check to see if yours will chamber a .38 Special round. If you can't insert it all the way, then the gun is in its original configuration.

I actually thought the S/N began with a '9', but that doesn't change the context of DCWilson's remarks regarding the fact that the gun would be what we refer to either as a "British Service Revolver" (BSR) or a "pre" Victory model. The Victory models began the second million of the M&P series and used a 'V' serial prefix, and later an "SV' prefix. After WWII production ended, the 'V' was dropped, but the 'S' remained in use until the 'C' prefix began signifying the 3rd million of the .38 M&Ps.

Boss 43, If I am not mistaken there is a Canadian property marking on butt and left frame. This makes it a more special piece than the typical British variation. I bought one in about 85% condition recently and paid $500 for it and was happy to add this variation to my collection. Yours looks like a nice specimen with nice case colors on hammer and trigger. Nice piece of WW2 history. Ron

Watch that upper sideplate screw looks loose to me. Looks like a good representation of a British S & W .

If the SN is 838xx0, it would have shipped about September 1941. The Canadian marking (if it has one) is a C with a broad arrow inside. I can't see it from the pictures.
