Pawn Shop Rescue
I was out running errands today (goofing off) and stopped into a pawn shop I had never visited before. On the middle shelf, I spotted a set of nicely colored N frame football targets with a revolver attached. The tag read Mdl 10. Hmmmmm? The first thing to jump out was the long action hammer, then the 5" barrel, then the single line address.
Brought it home and it cleaned up better than I had expected it to. The ejector rod, recoil shield and forcing cone indicate very little us. It lived in a holster, evidenced by the muzzle wear and faded high spots on the leading edge of the cylinder.
Serial # S 958*** should place production around 1947-48.
I am fairly new to the HE's and pre-model interest. I bought this thinking "Post war transitional". If I got that wrong someone please correct me. Also if someone could post a picture of the grips I need, I would appreciate it very much

S 958*** would make it as being shipped in late 1947 (probably November). Some refer to them as transitional, I call them post-war M&Ps, which is a more appropriate and less ambiguous term. It still uses the long action of the pre-war M&Ps, except it has the 1945 improved hammer block safety. That is what the S in the serial number means. Any K-frame grips will fit it, but correct ones would be the sharp-shoulder Magna service grips.
About 10 years later the Model 10 name came along. Yours is just an M&P. Hope the N-frame target grips are nice - could be worth some money. Grips needed are as shown below - note the sharp shoulder. Look on eBay.

I show several in the S956xxx to S958xxx range in my database and all of them shipped in November, 1947. So DWalt's estimate is right on target (if you will pardon the pun).
He has also shown you the correct stocks for that era M&P.

Thank you all for the information. Once again this site is a wealth of good information.
Correct grips are on the way from a forum member. This one will get to the range within a week. I am looking forward to shooting it.
