I picked up a project Highway Patrolman recently, S1758XX, with GSP stamp (Georgia State Patrol) on the frame and a factory butt swivel. a 4 screw, and not model marked.

Its certainly seen its share of use along the way with a cut down barrel - number marked cylinder face, some S&W factory rework stamps on the butt frame, at least one reblue. There is some pitting in places where it seems the gun probably sat neglected for a while.

I have seen the GSP commemorative m26, but haven't seen a gsp hp before? Anybody have any background on the use of the Highway Patrolman and the GSP - or share a picture of yours?

I think its a pretty cool gun, and am going to try and refurbish it a bit.

also, I was just thinking - is it weird to get excited over a frame stamp and a butt swivel?

it is what melts your butter that counts; not what melts the next guys butter. Very neat find

My brother is a retired 30 year GSP. They carried Mod 28s late 60s early 70s until they went to Mod 66s. He could not afford to buy his gun when they went to the 66s and has regretted it since. I am trying to find one GSP marked to send back to Smith for refurbing and have his badge & service dated engraved. A worthy project if you want to spend the time and money.

Not much to see.. its awaiting its turn in the project line. currently looking for a barrel to replace the one that was cut, and a sideplate that has a better trademark and without the pitting..

Looking for a 4 or 6 inch barrel?

undecided on that - was a 6" orig, but am leaning towards a 4"

Pretty sure I have a take off 6 inch from a police cut up frame if needed.
