Has anyone ever seen one of these, or better yet owns one. There were a very limited group of these done by smith & Wesson during WWII.

I remember reading something about S&W making up a few M&Ps with a chrome finish back in the 1930s as a test. But I remember nothing about any factory-chromed WWII Victory models. I would be most interested if there were any legitimate ones known.

There were a few late SV prefix Victories in nickel, but you are referring to chrome plated ones? Never heard of or seen one.

Don, I have a chrome M&P from a half dozen or so that we're produced in the 1930's. That's as close as I can get.....

From October 13 1942 invoices: " ADVERTISING ACCOUNT .38 M&P 5" Chrome Serial #614435 Express to Lieut. Matson A Holbrook, Naval Training School Newport, R.I.".
Something else to look for.

That one must have been in inventory for a long time. SN 614435 would suggest frame manufacture around 1930 and long before Victories were thought of.

That's what I was referring to in my previous response (#2). Do you have any more detailed background on these factory-chromed M&Ps?

I have a 6 inch chrome M&P with serial number 611108. According to Roy mine is one of 10 revolvers that were assembled in 1937 with chrome finishes. These guns were used as samples by the salesman from that point forward. Also, according to Roy, at least 6 of these guns were shipped to to Mr. Harvey D. Rush of Kansa City on the advertising account. These guns were ordered on 11-27-41. They were to be shipped to Mr. Rush, delivered for testing and then returned back to the factory.
1- 4 inch #612726
3- 5 inch #611189, 614434, 614613
2- 6 inch #622295, 622398

According to Don's information and Roy's there are two consecutively numbered gun in the bunch, 614435 and 614435.

My gun, 611108 was shipped to Mr. Rush in 1938 and then returned back to the factory for a number of years. It then shipped to Charles Greenblott co. in September of 1960.

One thing that makes a chrome gun easy to distinguish from a nickel is the hue. A chrome gun shows a blue hue as a nickel gun has a yellow tint. Just in case you stumble across one......

Don, send me your fax# or email and I will send you the info I have if your interested.

Don:

Coincidentally, member Turnerriver and I examined one today in beautiful condition. It was a 622000 serial range gun in 6 inch. Looked like a nickel gun until we set it down next to a real nickle gun. The chrome gun was very silvery in the poor indoor lighting while the nickle gun had a slight yellow cast to it. Very easy to see when side by side.

It came with a gold box numbered to the gun with a small white label marked Chrome taped over the Blue end label marking.

A most interesting M+P.

Food for thought.

I purchased a nickeled h&r 22lr revolver from a private seller. It looked like a yellow tarnish. I put the soft rag with Simi chrome polish and found a excellent chrome finish under the tarnish. I scored. With the original box too.
