My new to me K 22... 80%...serial number 143503...five-screw with correct serial number diamond grips came in a gold Smith box. The faded number on the bottom of box does not match revolver. Is the gold box correct?
Ball park value?
TIA Charlie
Gold boxes were used on virtually all post war S&W's until about the time the 5th screw was eliminated. So yours would be ca. 1952 and the box would be the correct style.
Value? Hmmm.... In true 80% condition, I'd think no more than maybe $400, but I'd like to see a pic or two to better judge the finish myself.
Just to be sure, does it have a K on the butt along with the serial number? If so, it would have been manufactured in 1952, as Mark stated. Also, is it a Masterpiece (6") of Combat Masterpiece (4")?
I would challenge anyone to find a K22 in decent condition for under $500 today. An 80% gun is typically selling for $550 to $600 at auctions.
