Sounds like it was modified. Pictures would help.....are you measuring the barrel from the end to the cylinder? The only model from the factory with a 3.5" barrel was a 357 magnum.
The finish also sounds non-factory.

Has to be something somebody put together. Are there any letters in the serial? I think that serial would be a post war issue with an S prefix.

Welcome to the Forum.
It sounds like you have a 2nd model .455 that has been re-chambered to .45 Colt, has had the barrel shortened from the factory 6 1/2" and been nickel plated with gold hammer and trigger..
Please post pictures.

62768 would indicate an N-frame revolver with a 1946 shipping date, but from your description, it appears to have been modified so as to be far from what it was like when it left the factory. If so, it has no collector value. The SN should have an S-prefix.

It could also be a 2nd model .455, without the "S" SN prefix.

I thought the pre war serials ended around 60,000.

Post WWII N-frame SNs began at S62,489
From the picture, it shows to have the Mushroom-style extractor rod knob which was discontinued in 1927, therefore it must be a converted .455 Mk II HE 2nd Model. The target grips are relatively modern, 1970 or later. And the barrel and nickel plating would not be original.
While it might be an excellent shooter, it would carry no collector premium as it is far from being in original condition. Worth just whatever someone would pay for a utilitarian shooter.

Thank you so very much for your help. What do you think would be a fair asking price?

SP, the .455s were in their own serial number range that went up to 74755, according the SCSW 3rd.

IMHO, $300-$375, depending on your location.
