The Utah Highway Patrol issued the .357, pre-27 and 27 through 27-2 in 3-1/2 inch and blue finish from 1935 until the mid-to-late 1980's when they switched to the H&K squeeze cocker in 9mm. UHP issue guns are neatly marked on the frame.

"The UHP issued RMs? I wonder how many and where they all are now?"
Probably less than a hundred RM's, probably a lot less. The UHP was never a very big agency, I don't think they have 400 troopers even now.
All over the country. Saxon Pig has posted photos of his. I have never seen one for sale here, but I think he said he bought his when he lived in Utah some time ago. The R.M. replaced the 6-1/2 inch Second Model .44 Specials they first issued. I've got one of those.
I went through the state police academy with 3 UHP rookies in 1981. Their issued guns were all M-27 -somethings and were really worn, one being almost unsafe to shoot from almost no carry-up. He did his firearms training with his own Model 19.

Remember for 20 years....1935 to 1955 if you wanted a .357 it was an N-frame ".357 Magnum" some from 1935 to 1940 had Reg. Mag. numbers........... some did not............. or like my Dad a 6" Colt New Service......
OK I think there were a few Colt SAA's made.........
Edit:
IIRC Highway Patrolman was introduced in 1954........ became the Model 28 in 57"
Combat Magnum was introduced in 1955 ? and became the Model 19 in 1957

On the most popular auction site, there is currently a 4", 27-2, marked "Utah Hwy. Patrol" for less than a grand. Somebody needs to give that poor orphan a forever home. And no it don't need to be me........ hardcase60

I have a non-Reg Mag that was PD issued in a Dallas,TX suburb.
My father has a Reg Mag from Kansas City...I know that there were many issued in that dept.
Here is a photo of my Non-Registered Magnum that was sent to University Park PD, Dallas,TX in 1940.
I also know that the Austin, TX PD issued pre-27, model 27 and it's variants in nickel. There is one member here who has several in his collection.

Both. A friend of mine left our small East Alabama sheriff's department in the late '70s and went to work for the FHP. He was issued a 5" nickel M27.

grips are Keith Brown roper's. They are nice.
It's a 27-2, I think around 1965-67. I have the history of the gun's service somewhere around here. I guard it so securely I have a hard time finding it. Most of these for APD were nickel and 3 1/2". I'll see if I can find the pic showing the markings. BTW, its one of my most favorite smiths. BFF.
